At WFP, we are looking for an experienced Nutrition Officer (Food Fortification), to join our Nutrition programme and policy team to be hired on a Fixed Term Contract at NOC level and to be based in Khartoum.  



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

JOB PURPOSE:

To provide technical assistance in support of large-scale food fortification to government ministries and institutions, and guide private sector and other key stakeholders and ultimately contribute to meeting the nutritional needs of vulnerable populations in the country of Sudan, including facilitation of enhanced coordination and/or provision of technical advice on legislation and enforcement of legislation and standards, nutrition strategies, programme design, implementation and monitoring.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

The overall aim of this role is to provide technical assistance and support to government on food fortification policies, strategies, programming and implementation management, legislation and enforcement of legislation and standards, as well as providing advice to the international food fortification lead and  head of nutrition in WFP on the developments in the nutrition and food fortification landscape, programming and opportunities in Sudan, including WFPs positioning in this area of expertise. The Nutrition Officer (Food Fortification) will work under the Head of Nutrition and the direct supervision of the Food Fortification Manager and will be responsible for the following:

 

  • Support the strengthening of national nutrition initiatives, including the development of national government policies related to nutrition as well as nutrition strategies, action plans, protocols and guidelines in line with the SUN Movement and international guidance and current evidence, focusing on food fortification and tackling micronutrient deficiencies.
  • Provide technical advice to the Country Office staff and management on nutrition specific and nutrition sensitive programme and policy issues including assessment and analysis, the choice of objectives, activities, transfer modalities and commodity choice for nutrition specific and nutrition sensitive programming in line with WFP standards and processes.
  • Work with staff in procurement, logistics, finance, other programme units and other divisions to ensure effective design and delivery of WFP nutrition programming.
  • Provide support for operational partnerships, including inter-agency collaboration and public and private sector partnerships, to ensure a strong multi-sectorial response to nutrition – specifically micronutrient deficiencies – in both emergency and non-emergency settings.

 

 

  • Prepare accurate and timely reporting and learning processes and documentation, contributing to a knowledge base that informs decision making of WFP and other stakeholders.
  • Support the design, and implementation of nutrition assessments and communicate the nutrition situation clearly and effectively to nutrition stakeholders, particularly in relation to micronutrient deficiencies, diet diversity and food fortification.
  • Represent WFP at national and international meetings to contribute in technical discussions, exchange experiences, advocate for nutrition interventions and identify areas of potential collaboration.
  • Build capacity of WFP staff, partners and national governments to prepare for and respond to nutrition problems, with emphasis on micronutrient deficiencies.
  • Support the monitoring and evaluation of WFP activities, as well as government activities and programmes, provide technical analysis, and interpretation.
  • Guide and supervise more junior staff, acting as a point of referral and supporting them on more complex analysis and queries.
  • Contribute to emergency preparedness actions, providing technical recommendations on contingency planning, risk analysis and early warning related to nutrition risks.
  • Act in an assigned emergency response capacity as required to meet emergency food and nutrition assistance needs, if and when the situation demands so.

 


 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Advanced University degree in Public Health Nutrition, Nutrition, Food Technology, Medicine or other relevant fields, OR a first university degree in the same areas.

 

Experience: For holders of an advanced degree, 5 years of relevant experience with progressively increasing responsibilities in the field of nutrition and health, food fortification and/or food technology in crisis and recovery environments OR 7 years of the same experience for holders of a first university degree.

 

Languages: Fluency in English and Arabic

DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE

  • Experience working with governments on developing nutrition policies and/or implementing nutrition programme (within food security or health).
  • Experience conducting nutritional assessments, analysing data both quantitative and qualitative and drafting recommendations for programme
  • Experience working on the prevention and control of micronutrient deficiencies including food fortification would be highly valued.
  • Experience in design and implementation of social behaviour change communication strategies will be considered an asset
