 Background:

The Nutrition Officer will provide effective implementation, coordination and supervision of nutrition interventions with the aim of improving the nutritional status of vulnerable groups in West Kordofan State of Sudan in the localities covered by the BHA and WFP funding; including managing day to day activities, documentation, monitoring and evaluation. Work closely with the National Health and Nutrition Coordinator and acting when he is not on the ground. Provide training support to nutrition workforce in West Kordofan and provide timely response in emergencies.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

Coordination and Technical Support

  • Provide supervision of the nutrition program implementation in the health facilities and in the field, Organize and coordinate the nutrition teams.
  • Assist the National Health and Nutrition Coordinator to provide technical support to nutrition teams in the supported health facilities and the implementation of essential nutrition services: Outpatient Therapeutic Program, Supplementary Feeding Program, infant and young child feeding, micronutrient supplementation, community mobilization and other preventive services.  
  • Support training of Community Nutrition Volunteers and other potential partners in all aspects of essential nutrition services.
  • Organize and conduct nutrition and health education sessions at the facilities and in the community and liaising with SMOH nutrition staff and community members to monitor IYCF activities in Project Operational areas.
  • Oversee and participate in routine and mass screening, registration and admission of children in the nutrition programs.
  • Establish and operate community mobilization and referral system for nutrition services. Create referral links for access to other services beneficial to the beneficiaries but not provided in the CONCERN supported nutrition program.
  • Liaise with CONCERN partners to explore opportunities for integration and effective working.
  • Strength planning, Monitoring and logistics systems with regards to nutrition activities.
  • Monitor nutrition supplies in the distribution sites and CONCERN warehouses and liaise with finance and logistics officers to ensure that stocks are ordered and delivered on time.
  • Assist the National Health and Nutrition Coordinator in monitoring the nutrition situation in CONCERN’s operation areas, including participating in nutrition assessments, surveillance and program reviews and ensuring equality of these activities as required.
  • Ensure that all program components meet humanitarian standards.
  • Supervise, appraise and identify staff training needs.
  • Prepare the different formal reports through the nutrition report templates and as per approved procedures and maintain accurate records.
  • Assist the National Health and Nutrition Coordinator in the timely report preparation and submission.
  • Assist in the development of training materials and modules.

 

Representation

  • Do active networking with nutrition stakeholders such as SMoH, WHO, WFP and UNICEF in the absence of National Health Coordinator.
  • Participate in the nutrition coordination meetings at state level and represent CONCERN in technical meetings as needed.
  • Represent CONCERN in technical nutrition missions conducted by stakeholders and UN agencies.

 

Management

·       Conduct  performance development reviews (PDR) for staff line managed(if any)

·       Cover the International Health and Nutrition Coordinator role on his/her absence.

·       Help collate yearly leave plan for health facility nutrition staff in coordination with SMOH and arrange coverage where necessary.

 

Other Duties:

Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned, including administrative and planning functions

Emergency response

 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

1.      Education

·       A degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or any other related disciplines (Nursing, Public Health) with At least three (3) years’ experience in Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition programming in an emergency context.

2.      Job related Experiences

·       Knowledge and experience in MoH systems at State level and working with and through local partners

·        Knowledge and experience in community based nutrition services; including an understanding of the community strategy and community level interventions

·       Good understanding of cross cutting issues- gender, HIV and AIDS, DRR, etc. and how to integrate them into public health and nutrition programmes.

·       Excellent programme planning, monitoring and evaluation, interpersonal/communication and report writing skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively in teams.

·       Fluent in both spoken and written Arabic and English.
