WPE Manager
International Rescue Committee

The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future.

 Section/Unit: WPE
 Duty Station: Gedaref, Sudan
Duration: Full time – 3 months contract
 Closing Date: 20 Jan 2021

 Background:

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities, IRC restores safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. The IRC leads the way from harm to home.

The IRC has re-registered in Sudan after leaving in 2009. The program is in start-up phase, in time for a global call for agencies to rapidly scale up in Sudan against a deteriorating humanitarian and economic situation; there are 9.3m people in need. Beginning on the 3rd of November, an influx of refugees was recorded at the border entry points in Eastern Sudan after military confrontations in the Tigray region in Northern Ethiopia. Since then, there have been over 49,370 registered refugees that have crossed into Sudan. The situation at the border has created urgent needs for additional resources and facilities to accommodate the new arrivals. Based on critical needs that have been established through the coordination clusters the IRC is planning an integrated protection, health, and EH response.

Women’s Protection and Empowerment (WPE) will establish a safe space for refugee women and girls living in Um Rakuba camp in Gedaref state. Within the safe space, the WPE Program aims at increasing access of women and girls to psychosocial and Gender based violence (GBV) case management services and enable communities to identify and mitigate safety and security risks faced by women and girls. All programming is implemented using survivor-centred approaches that prioritize confidentiality, dignity, safety, and respect.
