 Background:

Overall purpose of the role: The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and Danish Demining Group (DDG) is a humanitarian, non-governmental, non-profit organization founded in 1956 that works in more than 30 countries throughout the world, including South Sudan. DRC/DDG fulfils its mandate by providing direct assistance to conflict-affected populations, including refugees, internally displaced people and host communities. Under its mandate, the organization focuses on emergency humanitarian response, rehabilitation, post-conflict recovery and humanitarian mine-action. 

DRC/DDG commenced work in South Sudan, formerly Southern Sudan, in 2005 and currently provides expertise in camp management, community services, protection, food security and livelihoods and the provision of emergency shelter and NFIs in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Unity and Upper Nile states

 



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the Supply Chain Manager (line and functional management), the Office Helper will perform an effective and efficient DRC premises maintenance services in Khartoum, ensuring values and competencies in maintaining transparency, integrity and compliance with established DRC rules and regulations. The office helper shall work independently on routine tasks while follows instructions of the Logistics Officer on day to day tasks. 

Electric Work

  • Install, maintain, and enhance electrical systems and components, including generator, fuses, lights, and wiring
  • Inspect, test, and diagnose issues with electrical systems and components
  • Perform all work in a manner that meets and follows electrical codes, blueprints, and standards
  • Test electrical systems and components to ensure proper functioning
  • Complete required documentation of repairs and service information
  • Ensure adequate inventory of necessary supplies and parts
  • Calibrate equipment to provided specifications
  • Perform preventative maintenance on electrical systems, components and appliances
  • Perform preventative maintenance of Generator
  • Troubleshoot problems and make timely repairs

Plumbing work:

  • Install, repair, and maintain pipes, valves, fittings, drainage systems, and fixtures in DRC premises
  • Assembles fittings and valves for installation
  • Modifies length of pipes, fixtures, and other plumbing materials as needed for DRC Premises
  • Uses saws and pipe cutters as necessary
  • Installs, repairing and maintenance of water heaters and air-conditioning
  • Tests plumbing systems for leaks and other problems
  • Analyses problem and identifies appropriate tools and materials for repair
  • Follows DRC safety standards and complies with premises codes
  • Performs inspections of DRC premises plumbing systems to identify and replace worn parts
  • Follow building plans and blueprints.
  • Respond to, diagnose, and resolve plumbing emergencies.
  • Perform repairing, carpentry, painting, plastering, flooring, ceiling as required

Carpenter work:

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints
  • Assist in structural design, planning, layout, and installation
  • Perform repair work and installation of doors, windows, drywall, cabinets, stairs, and other fixtures as required
  • Ability to assess the quality of woodwork and materials
  • Ability to operate tools, machines, and other equipment
  • Compliance with DRC premises safety codes
  • Assist in shifting of DRC assets and other belongings 

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Experience and technical competencies:

 

  • Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible experience in electric, plumbing and carpentry work
  • 3 years or more INGO work experience in similar position is desirable  
  • Fluency in both verbal and written English and Arabic languages mandatory. 
  • Skilled in the use of hand and power tools used in electricity, plumbing and carpentry trade
  • Knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and safety practices
  • Ability to read and follow blueprints and rough drawings
  • Familiarity with PVC, CPVC, PEX, cast iron, and copper
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks unsupervised and unassisted
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to calculate basic mathematical problems
  • Diploma or certification in relevant work
  • Relevant Technical training
  • Electrician License
