 Background:

The Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO) is a national, non-governmental organization (NGO) registered with the Humanitarian Aid Commission in 2001. SUDO is working all over Sudan with 16 offices. SUDO focuses on:

  • Poverty alleviation and the eradication of hunger.
  • Provision of basic needs (water, health, sanitation);
  • Protection and conservation of the environment.
  • Implementation of civil education programme and the eradication of illiteracy;
  • Promotion of human rights;
  • helping local communities to mobilize efforts to face natural disasters and to provide humanitarian aid to people affected by disaster and war;
  • Peace building.


 
 Duties and responsibilities:

Under the overall supervision of the Program Coordinator, and the technical supervision of the WASH Specialist, the WASH Officer will support the implementation of SUDO's WASH activities, ensuring effective delivery of water supply, sanitation and hygiene promotion interventions at community and facility level, in order to improve access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services in areas facing severe shortages and public health risks. The WASH Officer will undertake the following responsibilities:

 

  • Implement SUDO's WASH activities, including water system rehabilitation, sanitation facility construction/rehabilitation, and hygiene promotion campaigns, ensuring the timely delivery of activities.
  • Conduct site assessments and provide technical supervision to ensure quality standards in construction and rehabilitation works.
  • Support the operation and maintenance of WASH facilities.
  • Work with communities to establish and support WASH committees and support hygiene promotion and behaviour-change activities.
  • Ensure the inclusion of vulnerable groups in all WASH activities.
  • Collect and report activity data, and support SUDO's monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning (MEAL) processes, including baseline studies and ongoing monitoring.
  • Document field progress and challenges and report them to the Program Coordinator (Head of Office) and WASH Specialist.
  • Conduct quarterly assessments and reporting on health facility WASH coverage, communal and institutional latrine coverage, and overall latrine coverage and functionality in the intervention areas.
  • Assess water quality monitoring tests, in coordination with the relevant government water quality teams, to ensure access to clean drinking water at the household level.
  • Represent SUDO in WASH sector meetings, cluster meetings and other relevant coordination meetings at the locality/state level.
  • Participate in local coordination meetings, support service mapping and data collection, and ensure alignment with SUDO's programme processes.
  • Ensure safe and inclusive delivery of WASH services and promote accountability to the affected population, in line with SUDO's safeguarding policy.
  • Work directly with communities and local leaders and act as a mentor throughout the planning and implementation of WASH activities.
  • Prepare activity reports as requested by the Program Coordinator/Head of Office.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the accountabilities of the post.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  1. Degree in Water Engineering, Environmental Health or any other related field.
  2. At least 5-7 years' work experience in WASH programming in development or emergency activities.
  3. Experience in emergency or development settings, with strong field implementation skills.
  4. Ability to work in remote and challenging environments.
  5. Experience in using community-based and participatory approaches, and familiarity with humanitarian standards.
  6. Good communication and team-working skills, with the ability to engage effectively with communities, government counterparts and other stakeholders.
  7. Computer literate.
  8. Ability to communicate and write reports in English and Arabic languages.
