 Background:

PROGRAM SUMMARY

Mercy Corps has been operational in Sudan since 2004 and currently leads humanitarian assistance and longer-term development efforts in conflict-affected South Darfur, Central Darfur, South Kordofan, North Kordofan, Kassala, Gedaref, and Khartoum States, supporting host communities, IDPs, returnees and refugees. Mercy Corps’ current areas of programming include food security and livelihoods, WASH, health, nutrition, peace building and protection, resilience, and Market Systems Development.

 

THE POSITION   Summary

Working in the Finance Department under the directionof the Finance coordinator Countrybased Finance Manager, the Finance Assistant will assist in the processing and recording of payment transactions in a timely and accurate manner.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT

 

  1. Prepare checks or wire transfer requests based on fully approved documents and present to approved check-signers for review and signature.
  2. Prepare bank payment vouchers and ensure that all bank transactions are properly and fully documented.
  3. Record payment daily cash and Bank transactions into the navigator.
  4. Manage and dispense the petty cash in the office

 5. Perform cash counts in line with the cash management policy.

6. Scan the supporting documents for all the financial transactions on a weekly basis.

7. File all cash and bank vouchers and maintain a voucher filing system such that files are updated, complete and safeguarded.

8. File all cash and bank complete vouchers scanned copies on the shared drive

 

9. Support program and operations team with training and guidance on financial paperwork and systems. Ensure that all paperwork submitted for transactions/payments is full and complete.

10. Travel to the field as necessary for audit, payments, and other important activities.

11. Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and not to jeopardize its humanitarian mission.


 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  1. Two or more yearsof bookkeeping, bankingor cashiering experience.
  2. A degree in accounting or a relevantbusiness field is desirable.
  3. Strong computer skillsin MS Office programs, particularly Excel.
  4. Accuracy in the processing of cash transactions, mathematical aptitude and attention to detail.
  5. Excellent oral and written Englishskills.

 

 

SUCCESS FACTORS

 

A clear understanding of finance and procurement ethics as well as the willingness and ability to enforce compliance with Mercy Corps and donor policies and procedures is essential. A high level of personal integrity, honesty and transparency in all cash handling is essential. The ability to interact effectively with international and national staff members is required. A demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately, meet deadlines, and process information in support of changing program activities is necessary.

Mercy Corps team members represent the agency both during and outside work hours when deployed in a field posting or on a visit/short term assignment to a field posting.
