 Background:

DRC is a private, independent, non-profit organization (NGO), devoted, on the basis of humanitarian principles to securing the Protection of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs), and to promoting long term solutions to the problems of forced displacement. DRC works in the context of conflict-induced displacement of populations and in return and reintegration situations

 

The DRC HMA (Humanitarian Mine Action) team extensively collaborates with the National Mine Action Center (NMAC) and other national and state authorities. Furthermore, the HMA team will provide multiple ongoing capacity building trainings for the Humanitarian Mine Action sector in Sudan. Both of these activities require interpretation services (Arabic / English with Mine Action technical terminology

 

Overall purpose of the role:

The purpose of the HMA Assistant is to support the non-Arabic speaking HMA team members with communication to NMAC,local authorities, and partner teams. Furthermore, the HMA Assistant will be responsible for interpreting between non-Arabc speaking HMA technical trainers and the Arabic speaking training participants, and for translating between partner team members and DRC staff, when needed. 

Trainings will be led by DRC’s Technical Adviser or other technical personnel and delivered to Arabic-speaking participants from the National Mine Action Center and other humanitarian mine action actors. To support effective communication throughout the course, the HMA Assistant is to provide accurate and consistent translation during training activities. The purpose of this role is to provide interpretation support between the lead trainer and participants throughout the different courses, ensuring clear communication that is technically accurate during classroom instruction, practical exercises, demonstrations, discussions, and safety briefings.

 



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide interpretation services to non-Arabic speaking HMA team members during coordination meetings with NMAC, the local authorities and with local partners.
  • Provide technical interpretation services during HMA and project management trainings to the HMA sector (NMAC, national NGOs) in Sudan. 
  • Support the HMA team with any coordination, logistical and administrative activities required for trainings and HMA programme activities. 
  • Provide consecutive interpretation between English and Arabic during the full duration of the technical HMA trainings
  • Support communication during:
    • classroom sessions
    • practical exercises
    • demonstrations
    • participant questions and discussions
    • daily briefings and debriefings
    • safety and medical briefings
  • Ensure that technical terminology is translated as clearly and accurately as possible (with support from DRC’s Arabic-speaking Technical Field Manager)
  • Support the lead trainer in communicating instructions, especially during practical and safety-critical training activities. Note the practical activities will be conducted outdoors, partially in open fields
  • Assist with translation of short verbal exchanges between the trainer, participants, and relevant counterparts as needed during the course
  • Maintain professionalism, neutrality, and confidentiality throughout the assignment
  • Coordinate closely with the lead trainer in advance of sessions to familiarize themselves with terminology, agenda, and key messages
  • Review relevant training material and relevant SOPs provided by the Instructor upon short notification to ensure familiarization with the technical content before training commences.

Administration:

  • Perform administrative tasks related to document management; including printing, coordinating signatures, scanning, and archiving.
  • Coordinate practicalities related to events, meetings, and trainings.
  • Ensure close coordination and maintain excellent working relationships with local authorities and relevant external stakeholders.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Proven experience as an interpreter between English and Arabic
  • Strong spoken fluency in both Arabic and English
  • Prior experience supporting technical training, preferably in humanitarian, security, engineering, or mine action contexts
  • Ability to understand and accurately interpret specialized or operational terminology
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a training environment
  • Professionalism, punctuality, and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Preferred: Previous experience  in the HMA sector and knowledge of EOD-related terminology
