 Background:

The incumbent will devote 100 % effort to this project and will be in charge of overall supports the implementation of hygiene promotion and sanitation activities in collaboration with the WASH officer and project coordinator. The position will be based in Khartoum for AORD’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) project. He\She roles will focus on community mobilisation, hygiene promotion, field monitoring, and support to WASH activities.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implement hygiene promotion and community engagement activities in accordance with AORD WASH quality standards and project guidelines.
  • Conduct daily field monitoring of hygiene promotion activities, documenting progress against the planned activities and reporting observations to the line manager.
  • Prepare and submit brief weekly written and verbal updates on field activities, challenges, and community feedback to the supervisor.
  • Support the MEAL team in collecting monitoring data, facilitating beneficiary feedback, and documenting lessons learned to improve project implementation.
  • Maintain regular coordination with trained community groups and volunteers, organizing follow-up meetings and monitoring the implementation of hygiene activities conducted by these groups.
  • Deliver awareness sessions and household-level communication on key hygiene practices, including safe water handling, food hygiene, sanitation, and environmental health.
  • Participate in community and coordination meetings with local authorities and community representatives, and report key outcomes and community concerns to the line manager.

Community Mobilization and Engagement

  • Facilitate community mobilization activities to encourage active participation in the planning and implementation of WASH services and hygiene and environmental activities.
  • Organize and conduct community hygiene promotion sessions, sanitation campaigns, focus group discussions, and meetings with key community stakeholders.
  • Support the establishment and follow-up of WASH Committees and community hygiene volunteers (CHVs) in targeted communities and informal settlements.
  • Assist in mobilising communities for environmental cleaning campaigns, vector control activities, and proper waste management practices.
  • Strengthen the capacity of community hygiene volunteers through on-the-job coaching and regular follow-up to ensure the effective delivery of hygiene promotion messages.

Distribution and Field Support

  • Assist in organizing and implementing WASH Non-Food Item (NFI) distributions, including community mobilization, beneficiary registration, distribution organization, and documentation of recipients.
  • Ensure communities are informed about the proper use and maintenance of distributed WASH items.
  • Manage and organize WASH IEC materials, ensuring they are properly distributed and utilized during community sessions, and report any shortages to the line manager.

Water Safety and Environmental Hygiene Support

  • Support field follow-up on water chlorination and basic water quality monitoring at water points and household levels, and maintain simple tracking records for review by the WASH Officer.
  • Promote safe water storage, handwashing practices, and environmental sanitation within households and community spaces.

Data Management and Reporting

  • Maintain daily records of field activities, attendance lists, and community engagement activities using project monitoring tools.
  • Update project tracking tools and databases with accurate field information.
  • Report regularly to the line manager on activity progress, operational challenges, community feedback, and beneficiary engagement.

Teamwork and Coordination

  • Work collaboratively with the WASH team and other project staff to ensure smooth implementation of activities and achievement of project objectives.
  • Maintain strong relationships with community leaders, volunteers, and beneficiaries to support effective community participation in WASH activities.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Qualifications and Experience

  • Preferred a university degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, or another related technical subject is desirable.
  • Minimum 1 - 2 years’ relevant experience within a humanitarian organization in Public health, Hygiene Promotion, Community Mobilization, or WASH.
  • Good knowledge of the Hygiene Promotion Activities, supervising the implementation of WASH, and Sanitation approaches.
  • Good experience of working directly with Local communities, IDPs, and Refugee communities.
  • Understands the mainstreaming of gender, disability inclusion, and accountability to affected populations mechanisms in WASH programming
  • Good communication skills; experience with dealing with Communities; good written and spoken English and Arabic.
  • Computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and basic report-writing ability
  • Familiarity with WASH Cluster coordination, SPHERE standards, and humanitarian principles.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and representation skills.
