WHO WE ARE

 

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

THE PURPOSE

 

The Heavy Vehicles Driver transports goods and people in a safe and timely manner, in accordance with ICRC rules and regulations and national traffic laws.

 

REPORTS TO (ROLE)

 

The Dispatcher



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Drives trucks and other vehicles in strict adherence to internal security rules and national traffic laws; drives efficiently to minimize fuel consumption and use of material.
  • Constantly monitors security conditions on the road.
  • Is accountable for the cargo under their supervision, from signing of the waybill to delivery.
  • Loads and unloads the truck or supervises loading and unloading.
  • Ensures that goods are stored inside the vehicle according to local, international and ICRC safety standards (attachment and distribution of goods, use of pallets, etc.).
  • Checks their assigned vehicle(s)' equipment, general functioning and body condition and ensures that it is kept fueled and clean inside and out.
  • Checks that trips have been authorized where necessary.
  • Immediately reports accidents, defects and/or missing equipment to management.
  • Can act as head of convoy as needed (in charge of the driver(s), application of security rules and timeframe for the convoy).
  • Ensures that risks are mitigated by performing the controls assigned to his/her role as described in the Logistics Risk and Control Matrix

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

DESIRED PROFILE AND SKILLS

 

  • Strongly motivated by humanitarian work
  • Able to work under pressure in a potentially dangerous environment

 

 

CERTIFICATIONS / EDUCATION REQUIRED

 

  • Secondary school diploma.
  • Diploma in Mechanics are preferred.
  • General Driving license for at least 7 years; Succeeded in ICRC Driving test
  • Master 4/4 and VHF use
  • Knowledge (spoken and written) of English.
  • Knowledge of the local language(s).

 

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

 

  • Good knowledge of the security situation and terrain in the area of assignment.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a truck driver.
  • Ability to change a tyre and carry out other minor repairs (e.g. change light bulbs) on the road.
