 Background:

ROLE PURPOSE: 

Under the supervision of the Shelter & NFI Officer, the Assistant supports the direct delivery of emergency shelter and NFI interventions to affected displaced families. The role is primarily field-based and community-facing, focusing on registration, distributions, data collection, and ensuring feedback from beneficiaries is captured and addressed. The Assistant facilitates collaboration with shelter and NFI committees, mobilizers, and focal points, ensuring that interventions uphold dignity, safety, and child safeguarding principles, and follows up on the application of safe shelter initiatives at the settlement level.

The Assistant maintains regular contact with vulnerable groups and plays a vital role in identifying beneficiaries according to SCI’s vulnerability criteria, ensuring that assistance reaches those most in need while upholding the organization’s core vision and principles when engaging with affected communities.

 Duties and responsibilities:

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY: 

  • Support beneficiary registration, verification, and distribution of shelter/NFI items.
  • Assist with rapid needs assessments and household-level data collection.
  • Work with community committees, mobilizers, and focal points to ensure fair and accountable aid delivery.
  • Provide on-site support for crowd management, feedback collection, and safeguarding during distributions.
  • Maintain accurate records of distributions and field activities.
  • Escalate community concerns and complaints to the Officer/coordinator & HPI for action.
  • Promote SCI child safeguarding standards and ensure Do No Harm during all activities.

Working in humanitarian / emergency contexts 

  • Provides frontline support in emergency settings, assisting with the rapid delivery of shelter and NFI assistance to displaced families.

Coordination and representation

  • Support coordination with site management focal points, shelter and settlement committees, and community structures.
  • Assist the Shelter & NFI Officer in organizing and participating in site-level coordination meetings and relevant Shelter/NFI cluster discussions.

 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

 

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

(Education

  • Diploma or equivalent in social sciences, development studies, or related field.

 Experience

  • Experience working with communities, preferably in humanitarian or NGO settings.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Basic knowledge of humanitarian principles and standards.
  • Ability to work long hours in challenging environments.
  • Stronge engagement with the community at the local level.

Technical Skills:

  • Knowledge of shelter NFIs, hyenine kits distribution techniques suitable for emergency contexts.
  • Familiarity with humanitarian shelter and NFIs standards (e.g., Sphere standards).
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a challenging environment.
