 Background:

Cooperazione Internazionale (COOPI) is an international Italian NGO established in 1965. Since its establishment, COOPI has been undertaking activities to help and empower the poor and needy in different countries. COOPI Sudan started its operation in 2004 and has been primarily implementing emergency, relief and early recovery programs in water hygiene and sanitation, food security and livelihood, nutrition and protection sectors.

 

COOPI is currently implementing several projects in North Darfur and Khartoum in the sectors of WASH, Food Security and Livelihood, Climate Change adaptation, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Refugee Response.

 

The Community Mobilizer assists in implementing WASH project(s) in the field, follow-up activities in the field, and collects relevant information to facilitate project reporting. He/she establishes and maintains good working relationships with all project stakeholders and beneficiaries, including community leaders, local communities, implementation partners, and local authorities



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

Elaboration of WASH construction, promotion and engagement with the communities and assessments.

  • Participating in detailed needs assessment, baseline surveys and KAP surveys
  • Identifying the most appropriate and understandable messages and communication channels regarding the target population. 
  • Participating in the preparation of Manuals and IEC materials for Hygiene promotion; 
  • Participating in the process of evaluating the necessary material needed for hygiene promotion campaigns/activities

Hygiene promotions and community capacity building, engagement and management 

  • Participating in the formation of community structures in hygiene promotion and strengthening of the existing structures such as WASH Committees through trainings sensitization workshops and other hygiene promotion awareness campaigns
  • Mobilizing the community to participate in WASH activities 
  • Participating in the training of community groups and mobilize them to carry out hygiene promotion campaigns, through dramas, poems and singing shows at community, IDP or health Facilities level.
  • Carry out house to house visits while sensitizing on hygiene observances 
  • Supervising waste management activities and facilitating the involvement of the communities
  • Mobilizing the community and actively organizing the distribution of WASH kits
  • Managing the process of community feedback and complaint mechanisms 

Implementation, Monitoring and Reporting

  • Conducting participatory monitoring of water and sanitation facilities usage and maintenance with community
  • Participating in the distribution of water and sanitation NFI items /hygiene kits/ and carry out post distribution monitoring
  • Reporting on the progress of the work to the supervisor and the Head of project;
  • Accounting accurately for the funds received and used in carrying out project activities 
  • Following up any outbreak in the locality and give update accordingly
  • Collecting relevant data required/related to key indicators as determined by the WASH officer, PM in the targeted communities for both report writing and proposal development 
  • Participating in the proposal development 
  • Reporting any possible problems or conflicts during the execution of project activities including issues of sexual exploitation and abuse by any staff or members of the community 
  • Mediation and resolving of any problems within the IDPs camp with the community leaders or administration leaders on behalf of COOPI 
  • Giving translation services during trainings and workshops
  • Interpreting for expatriate staff and facilitate discussions and relations with communities

Coordination and representation

  • Collaborating with relevant Internal and External technical experts on issues related to WASH implementation in the targeted areas
  • Ensuring that gender and disability mainstreaming is done in all WASH activities, with special attention to those who are marginalized and overlooked in community decision making aspects are adequately considered during the planning and implementation process
  • Representing COOPI at WASH meetings and other relevant technical coordination meetings organized by the WASH partners 
  • Any other duties assigned by the WASH Officer/ PM. 

 

Other: 

  • Participate in donor visits and monitoring missions if required; 
  • Translate and/or interpret for COOPI staff and facilitate discussions and relations with project stakeholders; 
  • Perform general office work such as drafting reports, filing documents, photocopying, scanning, updating databases, analyzing and processing data, etc.; 
  • Report any problem encountered with accuracy and rapidly.

 

General Duties: 

  • Is aware of COOPI’s objectives and activities in Sudan.
  • Respects security rules at all time.
  • Pledges to respect and act in accordance with COOPI’s Code of Ethics, PSEA Policy, and other applicable organizational policies.
  • Replace other employees in their absence when necessary.
  • The staff member may be asked to perform duties and tasks not covered in this job description as well as to provide support to other functional units when requested and necessary.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in public health, biological sciences, social science or education from a recognized institution.
  • At least two years of practical experience in a NGO or INGO/UN agency in the WASH implementation
  • Knowledge and previous experience in carrying out assessments, surveys or any data collection engagement 
  • Skills in community capacity building trainings like CLTS, CHAST, CATS Health and Hygiene Education through Sport and Play (HHETSP) activities in schools.
  1. Experience in hygiene promotion, conflict resolutions, work with local communities, children and vulnerable people
  2. Very good coordination and communication skills, in public speaking and work with people from different backgrounds.
  3. Understanding of the humanitarian principles and values 
  4. Respect to cultural believes within the ethnic communities 
  5. Good team work player as well as able to self-motivate
  6. Computer skills in Ms. words, Ms. Excel, power point etc
  7. Knowledge of English speaking and writing is a MUST.
  8. Good organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
