Duties and responsibilities:
- Ensuring all electrical installations in MSF facilities comply with MSF standards and performing autonomously and ensuring, all necessary complex / advanced electrical installations, maintenance and repairs, according to the supervisor’s instructions. This includes the following tasks :
- Carrying out critical rehabilitation tasks and corrective maintenance interventions and the coordination and execution of required tasks as well as installation of needed electrical equipment as defined by each project. Elaborating the necessary documentation for carrying out energy installations projects (plans, list of materials, etc.)
- Carrying out and updating the electrical installations inventory in MSF missions’ facilities and performing annual maintenance procedures and safety checks across facilities in the project. Executing any needed tests after any repair or maintenance.
- Identifying local technical actors, and organizing their participation in the project (training of technical staff, establishing relations with local companies, contractors and suppliers, quotations, contracts, etc.)
- Making suggestions regarding any repair or maintenance work needed in MSF electrical installations and equipment and assisting logistics department with any urgent support/advice or any relative work needed
- Managing the stock of consumable items related to electrical installation, repairs and maintenance, filling in the stock cards, carrying out physical stock inventories, executing orders necessary for renewing stock, avoiding any shortage
- Responsible for the equipment and tools (including extinguishers), checking they are correctly and safely used, maintaining and renewing them when necessary and keeping the inventory updated.
- Keeping working area clean and tidy.
- Ensuring that all record sheets and books related to maintenance are always completed and prepares needed reports before and after any repair or required maintenance.
- Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems in MSF clinics, hospitals, guest houses, warehouses, and offices, ensuring a safe and functional power supply for critical medical equipment and lighting. This includes setting up backup generators, circuit breakers, wiring, and electrical panels. The electrician will focus on maintaining backup generators and power systems, ensuring they are operational during power outages in collaboration with skilled labor.
- Conduct electrical safety inspections of MSF facilities, including examining circuits, grounding systems, and electrical appliances to ensure compliance with MSF's safety protocols and international standards. Identify potential electrical hazards and perform necessary upgrades or repairs. Regular checks on fire safety and prevention systems are crucial due to the high risk of electrical fires.
- Ensure a continuous power supply for the storage of temperature-sensitive medical supplies, such as vaccines, through the installation and upkeep of backup generators, uninterrupted power supplies (UPS), and battery systems. This also includes setting up and maintaining reliable off-grid power systems, which are crucial for maintaining the cold chain for vaccines and other medical supplies.
- Install and maintain solar power systems (photovoltaic panels, charge controllers, batteries, inverters) to provide renewable energy for MSF facilities, especially in off-grid locations or during prolonged power outages. This includes system design, installation, troubleshooting, and ensuring that solar energy solutions are effective in local environmental conditions (e.g., high temperatures, dust, and seasonal variations in sunlight).
- Regularly inspect and maintain battery storage systems used with solar power systems to ensure they are functioning properly and have sufficient charge capacity. Replace damaged batteries, check wiring, and verify that charge controllers are operating within the correct voltage range.
- Implement regular cleaning schedules for solar panels and components to maintain peak performance and prevent system failures. Monitor the performance of solar systems to ensure optimal efficiency, troubleshooting issues such as low power output, wiring faults, or faulty components using tools like multimeters to measure voltage, current, and system load.
- Provide on-the-job training for local technicians and MSF staff in basic electrical maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety procedures to improve the long-term sustainability of electrical systems within MSF operations. This includes training on electrical safety, repair procedures, generator management, and solar system maintenance, with a focus on creating self-sufficiency in maintaining the electrical infrastructure.
- Supervise daily workers to assist with basic electrical-related tasks during busy times when extra staff is needed.
- Others
- Performing any other relevant tasks assigned by his /her supervisor as necessary
