 Background:

WHO WE ARE

 

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

 

THE PURPOSE

 

The Cook provides quality and timely cooking services at ICRC premises.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Prepares meals (strictly respecting hygiene principles), with minimum food waste (uses older items first).
  • Orders/purchases and manages stocks of food and non-food (e.g. cooking gas, etc).
  • Manages expenses related to food under close supervision of her superior.
  • Ensures a good stock of food and non-food materials.
  • Ensures cooking equipment is in good condition (safe for use) and that the kitchen and canteen/dining hall are cleaned after each use (respecting hygiene rules).
  • Applies standard kitchen/cooking hygiene principles.
  • Organizes social events on large scale upon request.
  • Maintains cupboards, refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave and water filters clean at all times.
  • Informs superior of any problems, broken or faulty equipment and materials needing repair.
  • Performs a monthly stock count (inventory) of utensils and equipment according to standard items list and requests supervisor for any replacements.
  • Shows adaptability towards requests for special meals and preferences.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Primary school education.
  • Basic knowledge of English.
  • 2 years' work experience in a similar field of activity.
  • Knows and applies kitchen/cooking hygiene principles.
  • Proficiency in Planning and Organizing, Supply Planning   
  • Skilled in the following competencies: Leadership, Accountability, People management, Teamwork & Collaboration, Representing the ICRC, Beneficiary & Client focused.
