 Background:

Sudan carries a disproportionate share of the regional and global burden of vector-borne diseases. Diseases such as malaria, Leishmaniosis (visceral and cutaneous), Schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis and dengue continue to cause tremendous human suffering. Outbreaks of vector-borne diseases such as yellow fever, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever and Rift-Valley fever have occurred in recent past. Prevention by vector control has an important role in reducing morbidity and mortality due to vector-borne diseases. Nevertheless, the preventive power of vector control for disease prevention is grossly underused in the country. Furthermore, vector control has largely been based on use of a few classes of pesticides, which have resulted in emergence and spread of insecticide resistance in many places. Sustainable improvement of public health and environment and optimized utilization of resources call for implementation of Integrated Vector Management (IVM), defined as “a rational decision-making process for the optimal use of resources for vector control”. The aim of IVM is to improve the efficacy, cost-effectiveness, ecological soundness and sustainability of disease vector control. The main elements of an IVM strategy are (i) evidence-based decision making; (ii) an integrated approach to vector and to vector-borne disease control; (iii) collaboration within the health sector and with other sectors; (iv) advocacy, social mobilization and legislation; and (v) capacity-building.
