SUMMARY:
The Protection Manager will be responsible for implementation of Protection activities including child
Protection, GBV and general protection. In this capacity, the Protection Manager will be responsible for
day-to-day supervision and oversight of the Protection teams (and local partners), and various protection
activities, administration, coordination and implementation of the requirements of the programs at field
level. He/ she will spend over 80% of time in the field supporting protection interventions of
Community Based Protection, Gender Based Violence, Child Protection and General protection. The
Protection Manager will be expected to conduct regular movements in the field to support the protection
teams and oversee the protection programming including protection mainstreaming, whenever the
security situation allows.
She/he will provide technical support and conduct relevant research, and analysis, support supervision
visits, write reports, and participate in proposal development and training activities aimed at providing
information and knowledge base and methodologies to national counterparts, planners, policymakers,
program managers, and service providers. The Protection Manager will work closely with the Protection
Coordinator, Program/Project Managers, Area Managers, Line Ministries at State level, and the other
Humanitarian Actors in the IDPs Camps, gathering sites, host communities as well as Community Based
Structures.
This position is based in North Darfur with frequent travels to other RI locations as needed



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

 Create and execute work plans to ensure that project deadlines are met and targets achieved.
• Mentor and build the capacity of protection teams on Gender Based Violence, PSEA, Child
Protection, MHPSS and on all aspects or programming including technical knowledge, project
cycle management, team management, coordination and reporting.
• Supervise, mentor and coach the Protection team to conduct participatory assessments and/or
community consultations, monitoring visits etc. focused on protection concerns and targeted
communities. Ensure relevant reports are compiled and shared with line supervisor and other
team members.
• Supervise, mentor and coach the Protection team to deliver awareness-raising activities for the
affected population on protection related topics, such as child protection, GBV/ SGBV, PSEA,
referral pathways, Community Based Complaints Mechanisms etc.
• Provide skill-based supervision to Protection Case Management team, managing complex
protection cases, file creation, interviewing/assessments, note taking, needs assessments, PSS
reviews, managing sensitive cases, referring and following up on cases. Mentor and coach the
protection team on case management tools and resources.
• Oversee activities at various protection facilities and ensure appropriate data management at
these facilities. Coordinate with the MEAL team to conduct Client Satisfaction surveys to assess
the suitability of protection services at the facility and community levels.
• Ensure project reports are written and submitted in a timely manner as finalized per set schedules
(weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually) and indicators and achievements are followed-up and
reported upon, according to the work plan.
• Review monthly GBV and Protection data and provide feedback to the project managers
• Provide monthly protection trend analysis for protection interventions especially for CBP, CP
and GBV in close coordination with the Protection Coordinator. These reports include
complaints, referrals and case tracking, GBV incident recordings and Child Protection tracking
of cases through the CPIMS.
• Ensure project activities are implemented within the assigned budget parameters, in consultation
with the Finance Team and the Project Managers.
• Assist the Protection team in establishing an effective referral system with service providers to
ensure the affected population access tailored and survivor centered services.
• Support the establishment of feedback and response systems and the incorporation of feedback
received from persons of concern into program design and adaptation.
• Maintain protection presence through regular field visits and reports, making direct contact with
persons of concern, host communities, local authorities and partners.
• Assist in the coordinated implementation and oversight of Standard Operating Procedures
(SOPs) for all protection activities.
• Contribute to the development of proposals, budgets and concept notes in coordination with the
Protection Coordinator, Program/Project Managers, Area Managers, Grants team and Country
Level Technical Team.
• Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Protection Coordinator, relevant to the
achievement of Protection objectives

Staff Supervision & Development;
• Provide leadership, guidance, and support to the protection team through staff review meetings,
regular supervision and feedback on performance.
• Maintain open and professional relations with team members, promoting a strong team spirit and
providing oversight and guidance to enable staff to successfully perform in their positions,
including communicating clear expectations, setting performance objectives, providing regular
and timely performance feedback.
• In-coordination with HR department, ensure Performance Management System documentation
for all staffs is in place and followed up regularly.
• Identify capacity gaps and training needs within the team, and develop targeted training
programs or seek external training opportunities to address these gaps.
Representation/coordination with external actors
• Support a consultative process with Government counterparts e.g. SMOH,Social Welfare at local
levels, partners and persons of concern to develop and implement integrated strategies that
address the key protection priorities, including, for example, Child Protection, SEA, SGBV, and
solutions approaches.
• Actively participate in coordination initiatives with UN Agencies, Humanitarian partners, local
partners and represent RI on the forums, such as Camp Coordination/management meetings,
Protection related working group meetings, Child Protection, GBV, PSEA, MHPSS etc. and
other adhoc meetings as might be deemed necessary.
• Liaise with other partners, particularly through the protection cluster/working group/coordination
mechanism, to share findings and any issues of relevance and/or concern related to the targeted
communities. Additionally, share updates with the Protection Coordinator for meetings at the
State and Federal/National levels.
• Actively participate in other working group meetings and related activities with other partners to
strengthen the element of Protection Mainstreaming.
• Support the State Ministries of Health (SMOH) and Social welfare teams in designing and
evaluating the provision of various Protection Services.
• Ensure RI's mandate is shared and explained to relevant stakeholders.
Logistics/Finance
• Liaise, as necessary, with the programs, procurement and supply chain, logistics and finance
staff to ensure Protection related items are procured, transported, stored, managed and accounted
for correctly
• Actively plan and coordinate logistics and movements from and to different operational areas,
including in coordination with other protection/program teams to ensure resource efficiency
• Take the lead in supporting the coordination of program activities as they relate to logistics,
administration, finances, or security, in coordination with the relevant departments.
• Understand and support the protection staff to comply with the relevant internal policies and
directives

 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

University degree in social sciences, Protection, international law, humanitarian affairs, Human
Rights, International Affairs, Psychology, Social Work or similar field
• Minimum of five years of professional experience in protection programming.
• Previous working experience with an International Organization is an asset.
• Strong understanding of protection principles and likely protection concerns arising in the Sudan
context as well as conflict sensitivity.
• Solid experience in staff management in a cross-cultural environment is required including
capacity building, coaching, and mentorship.
• Demonstrated training and facilitation experience.
• Understanding and experience working with other protection components, particularly
Community-based protection, Child Protection and Gender Based Violence.
• Good communication skills; Fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic is required
• Understanding of local civil society organizations development
