 Background:

Providing nursing care, treatment and follow-up of patients, according to doctors’ prescriptions, protocols applied in service and universal hygiene standards/precautions, in order to ensure the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Knowing, promoting, implementing and following up the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensuring high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment. Respecting medical secrets and confidentiality at all times.
  • Organizing and carrying out care and treatments according to medical prescriptions, and assisting during consultations, daily rounds and other medical procedures. Participating in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary. 
  • Ensuring patients are properly received and installed and that those with lack of autonomy are assisted, especially regarding their feeding, personal hygiene, movements and comfort. For ER and OPD nurse, ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas, wards or during emergencies, detecting the priority acute/emergency cases, carrying out first aid care and referring them to the doctor when necessary
  • Sending material to be sterilized and recuperates it from sterilization.
  • Carrying out admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients (i.e. assessment of the evolution of their state of health and the identification of any emergency situation or deterioration
  • Carrying and supervising administrative procedures and documents (fill in patient’s files, forms, consumptions, statistics, registers, health files, etc.), ensuring an appropriate written/oral handover, and reporting any problematic situations and cases that may arise. Participating in data collection and keeping doctors/supervisors informed .
  • Participating in the department-related pharmacy and medical equipment control and maintenance (quality and its functioning, storage conditions, follow-up of expired drugs inventories, stock takes of medicines and material at every team changeover ensuring no material is taken out of nursing area/wards without prior authorisation, etc.) 
  • Perform cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Fol-lowing the user manual and protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning. 
  • Supervising and training nurse-aids, nutritional assistants, cleaners and other related staff under his/her supervision, ensuring teamwork and adherence to all appropriate protocols and procedures

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

PEDIATRIC WARD RELATED RESPONSABILITIES

  • Execute care and treatment according to the medical prescriptions and make sure to administer the prescribed medications and care at the specified time with the appropriate procedures.
  • Be able to do a good follow-up of infusions, transfusions (extravasation, respect of administration time the prescribed medical)
  • Monitor the daily consumption of all the medicines and other consumables in coordination with the Nursing team Supervisor, the logistics department and any other staff involved to ensure that the necessary resources.
  • Ensure that patients are properly received and settled in the health department. Ensure that patients with a lack of autonomy are helped, especially with personal hygiene, travel, and comfort.
  • Respect professional secrecy and medical confidentiality.
  • Carry out admissions, monitoring and follow-up of patients meaning the assessment of the evolution of their state of health, and the identification of the emergency situation or other deterioration and share with medical doctors/NTS, 
  • Participate in the health education of the patient (and family) when necessary.
  • Participate in the department's pharmacy and in the control and maintenance of medical equipment (carrying out inventories, stock of prescribed drugs and equipment at each shift change, ensuring that no equipment is taken out of the nursing department without authorization of NTS/NAM or MAM, checking its quality and functioning, storage conditions, monitoring the medical
  • Refer patients to the medical doctor if the case presents with severe or recurrent disease according PEWS
  • Be able to welcome the patient and refer to the doctor in case of doubt about the diagnosis.
  • With doctors follow-up round for all hospitalized patients every day, regular round of the wards with the doctor respecting the instructions given by the doctor during the round in order to facilitate a good handover of the service.
  • Update of hospitalization records, follow-up of the doctor's prescription
  • Give nursing care to hospitalized patients and check vital functions several times a day if the patient is severe as well as the medical doctors prescribe.
  • Administering care to patients in accordance with the principles of universal precautions
  • Ensure the correct management of severely malnourished children according to the protocol
  • To give systematic treatment to malnourished children at the entrance according to the medical prescription.
  • Follow up on nutritional treatment. 
  • Weigh malnourished people according to the MSF protocols, report to the doctor if the weight curve is not positive.
  • Carry out administrative procedures and documents (fill in patient files, forms, consumptions, statistics, shift workbook), ensure appropriate written/oral transfer and report problematic situations and cases that may arise, participate in data collection and inform supervisors.
  • For nurses in emergency rooms and inpatient clinics, triage patients in waiting rooms, hospital wards or during emergencies, detect the priority of emergency/serious cases, perform first aid when needed and submit it to the doctors.
  • Inform the NTS all problems and any relevant information to ensure the quality and proper functioning of the service.
  • Integrate and promote MSF values at work.
  • Ensure the timing of catheters, NGS and bladder catheters and ensure their changes after every 3 days
  • Ensure that medications are ordered correctly and ensure proper management of these medications.
  • Ensure that all standard and available materials and store them well.
  • Ensure good communication and give information on the patient's progress to his or her co-patients.
  • During malaria season make sure that all the beds have mosquito nets and bed sheets
  • If the child is still on treatment when the ITFC is discharged, give the mother the treatment and explain how to administer it to her child
  • Advise the mother on the nutritional monitoring of the child and the importance of continuing this monitoring at ATFC, insisting on the fact that the child is not yet cured
  • Admission/health care - Hospitalization
  • Admitted the patient from the outpatient consultation:
    • Administration of first aid according to the doctor's prescription. 
    • Monitoring of the patient and control of vital functions according to the medical prescription. 
    • Administering medications to patients as prescribed 
    • Administering care to patients in accordance with the principles of universal precautions
    • Presentation of patients to the medical doctors during the daily round.
    • Updating of hospitalization records and follow-up of the doctor's prescription in the event of changes
    • provide adequate information and ensure health education for patients
    • provide patients' families with the necessary information regarding the patient's diet and the operation of the service

 

IPC RESPONSABILITIES

  • Ensure that all team (nurses and doctors) are trained on standard universal precautions.
  • In relation to IPC activities, supervises staff and provides technical assistance, support, training and advice using existing IPC tools – audits, checklists, audits, etc.
  • Implement and reinforce the additional precautions regarding the transmission of the patient through contact with the patient, as appropriate.
  • Produce reports with information and recommendations for the weekly medical sitrep and share with the Nam any abnormalities and propose immediate action if necessary
  • Ensure that the pediatric’s environmental criteria are respected; with the Hospital Facilities Manager and the WASH Supervisor, ensure the display of the essential requirements to be met inside the hospital structures
  • Ensure compliance with aseptic care techniques, the correct use and wahsing hands, Monitor and analyze the consumption and quality of IPC materials and equipment 
  • In collaboration with the Nam, MAM, MD and NTS, maintain and support the implementation of standard precautions in the various treatment rooms on a daily basis, for all departments.
  • Participate in the medical and weekly meetings and remind them of good care practices if necessary.
  • IPC standard precautions include Hand Hygiene, risk assessment at point of care, appropriate patient placement, appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), prevention of accidental exposure to body fluids, safe and appropriate treatment of re-usable medical devices, sterilization, aseptic technique, safe handling of laboratory samples, waste, waste management, cleaning and disinfection of surface and environment, safe linen management, respiratory hygiene and individual hygiene for staff, caretakers and patients.
  • Transmission-based Precautions (TBP): are the second level of basic infection prevention control and are to be used in addition to standard precautions for patients who may be infected or colonized with certain infectious agents for which additional precautions are needed to prevent infection transmission (contact, droplet, airborne)
  • Ensure compliance with standard Infection prevention and Control in the all the pediatric department
  • Train all the staff on the waste management system, implement the system and ensure that the teams are respect

 

OTHER TASK

  • Ensure a smooth running of the physical and written activities of the department: presentation of patients in order from the most serious to the most stable, of the events and of all the materials of the department. 
  • Mandatory attendance at staff meetings. 
  • Actively participate in the various team meetings and in trainings.
  • Responsible for the proper maintenance of consultation and hospitalization registers for the proper collection of statistical data.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

EducationEssential University bachelor's degree in science of nursing.
Experience

Essential 2 years of previous relevant experience 

Desirable previous experience in other NGOs’

Demonstrable experience in supervising and training others in a team setting.

Registration in the Sudanese medical council is essential.
