 Background:

WHO WE ARE

 

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

 

THE PURPOSE

 

The Radio Operator operates the ICRC’s telecommunications equipment. S/he maintains radio contact and telecommunications between sites, vehicles, and people so that the delegation can follow field movements in accordance with its program and with security rules.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Follows communication and transmission activity via telecommunications equipment. 
  • Ensures constant contact with people moving in the field and takes appropriate action as stipulated under security rules and internal guidelines. 
  • Proactively maintains information flow on security-related issues. 
  • Updates lists of field movements, messages transmitted, etc. 
  • Monitoring internal movement for ICRC vehicles. 
  • Updates the head count list daily. 
  • Gives radio-related briefings if required.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Vocational training in electronics, telecommunication, IT, or similar fields an asset.
  • 1 year of experience in electronics, information technology, telecommunication, or a similar position.
  • Some experience working with ICRC an asset.
  • Good knowledge of the country and local terrain.
  • Good command (spoken and written) of English and Arabic.
  • Good computer knowledge.
  • Proficiency in functional support and service delivery.
  • Skilled in the following competencies: Leadership, Accountability, People management, Teamwork & Collaboration, Representing the ICRC, Beneficiary & Client focused.
