The Nutrition Officer will report to the health manager in the field and will be responsible for all Nutrition activities at IRC Health Facilities in different states of operation. And will be technically working in close coordination with the senior Nutrition team at the head office.

  • Overall responsibility and management of the IRC Nutrition program in the selected state
  • Training and capacity building of IRC team members in the Primary Health Care Centers

Support and capacity building of the local partners and communities



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Manage and supervise all IRC Nutrition activities in assigned locations at HFs.
  • Ensure that staff abides with IRC\MoH protocol and guidelines.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of all Nutrition activities as raised in coordination with the Senior Nutrition Officer and MoH at the state level.
  • Take the lead of the IRC nutrition team and prepare work plans/schedules for nutrition activities.
  • Anticipate program needs to ensure that all Nutrition supplies are procured in a timely fashion and in coordination with the Senior Nutrition officer at the Khartoum level.
  • Assist with logistical support such as the preparation of relevant Nutrition tools and needed equipment for the program. 
  • Coordinate nutrition activities with the other IRC health, WASH, ERD, protection, and other related sectors as relevant to ensure nutrition is integrated. 
  • Monitor the progress of all malnourished children in the CMAM program through standard indicators (morbidities and mortalities, referrals, cured, defaulters, and discharge of children).
  • Ensure the referral of all severely malnourished children to the SCs or hospitals. Always encourage mothers to take their children to the SC and always work with the team to find solutions to problems that prevent mothers from doing so. Should the circumstance allow for keeping severely malnourished in OTP the child should be closely monitored.
  • Identify problems and constraints of the program and recommend appropriate solutions. Report any difficulties in program implementation to the Khartoum Senior Nutrition Officer\Medical Doctor.
  • Organize monthly meetings with the team at the center to discuss work progress, constraints, and recommendations.
  • Advise on disciplinary procedures for staff, when necessary, in conjunction with the medical Doctor and Khartoum Senior Nutrition Officer.
  • Keep the Khartoum Senior Nutrition Officer appraised of all activities in the program site to ensure regular communication.
  • Ensure proper storage of therapeutic foods and distribution to the beneficiaries.

Staff Training:

  • Identify training needs for Nutrition staff at the center and respond by implementing training where appropriate in liaison with the Senior Nutrition Officer.
  • Devise and plan a nutrition-oriented training program for other IRC sectors at the facility, in coordination with the Khartoum Nutrition Officer.
  • Provide technical support where necessary to IRC national partner which supports the Nutrition program in coordination with the Senior Nutrition Officer.
  • Attending IRC mandatory training, and any other training as recommended.

Health Education:

  • Ensure that appropriate health and nutrition education is provided to and understood by all mothers/ beneficiaries with a particular focus on mothers of malnourished children. 
  • Organize community nutrition education sessions in coordination with the nutrition and community health volunteers’ teams in coordination with IRC national partners.

Analysis of Statistics and Report Writing

  • Provide weekly\monthly progress reports and statistics for the TSFP\OTP and all Nutrition activities and liaise regularly with the Senior Nutrition Officer on the progress of the program. 
  • Review the monthly statistics with the Nutrition team at the facility compile the CMAM database for both TSFP and OTP and share it with Senior Nutrition. 
  • Document all population/beneficiaries target figures for the project, for different Nutrition activities and follow the progress of coverage. 
  • Ensure proper documentation and filing of the program’s activities.
  • Assist in providing information for donor reports, and donor-required documentation.

Liaison

  • Coordinate all IRC nutrition work with the other related partners at the state level including IRC local partner, MoH, WHO, WFP, UNICEF, and any other implementing partners in the field. 
  • Work closely with the MoH Nutrition department at the locality where is the HF allocated and provide capacity building for them. 
  • Note that this job description must remain flexible, to respond to additional tasks or changes as identified by the line manager.

General

  • Cooperate with other members of the IRC team and develop a good working relationship with colleagues.
  • Maintain confidentiality and enhance IRC’s reputation by acting in a professional and responsible manner.
  • Carry out any other duties as assigned by the Clinic Medical Doctor and the Senior Nutrition Officer.

 


 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Education: University degree in Nutrition or a related field
  • Work Experience: Minimum of 2 years of previous work experience in the Nutrition program.

Another requirement:

  • Proven experience in the implementation of the CMAM program
  • Experience in CMAM data analysis and/or data management.
  • Experience in Infant and Young Child Nutrition activity implementation.
  • Very good analytical and reporting skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to meet deadlines.

Good social skills and ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
