 Duties and responsibilities:

The Opportunity

 

Plan International Sudan aims to respond effectively, rapidly, and at a significant scale to the core humanitarian needs of children and their families affected by the conflict between the armed forces in Sudan. Specifically, Plan International Sudan aims to minimize disruption to formal and non-formal education systems and to restore formal education services; strengthen the proactive environment for children and their families including age and gender-appropriate services during and after disasters; create opportunities for and build capacity of young people affected by the armed conflict to generate income and to improve their life skills; and to become recognized actor in both in linking related community-based interventions to national coordination and interagency mechanisms where Plan International Sudan will gradually take on leadership functions.

 

 

The purpose of the role is to assist projects to implement strategies and activities related to MERL under all Plan International Sudan programmes.  The incumbent provides technical MERL support to M&E and project teams of Plan International and implementing partners, and assists in demonstrating progress against strategic objectives at the programme level.  The post holder also assists in the production of regular and ad hoc data and reports for internal use.

 

 

Do you have what it takes?

We are looking to recruit an individual who is a fully qualified MERL Manager. You will need to demonstrate significant proven experience in monitoring, evaluating, researching and learning in international development projects, preferably in education, health, child protection and household economic security, DRM, gender and inclusion.

 

The position involves overseeing MERL activities across strategic, programmatic, and project levels. Responsibilities include strategy development, monitoring, and evaluation, ensuring data quality and reporting accuracy, capacity building, coordination with stakeholders, and staff management. Upholding safeguarding and gender equality principles is integral. The role demands a deep understanding of MERL practices, strong communication skills, and a commitment to organizational learning and improvement.

 

To be successful in this role you will need to be a strong team player with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to communicate complex technical matters effectively to a non-technical audience, be customer support orientated, with excellent technical IT and analytical skills: fluency with complex online system / ERP and advanced Excel skills.

 

Essential criteria for this role include proven work experience as a MERL manager or coordinator in development or humanitarian work in the not-for-profit sector.

 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Technical Expertise

  • A bachelor’s degree in management, development studies, and or related degree;
  • Demonstrated relevant knowledge in successfully editing reports, newsletters, success stories, and various other publications as required
  • Excellent understanding of Plan International Programmatic Outcome Areas, Areas of Global Distinction, and Gender Transformative Programming
  • Excellent understanding of the various information and documentation standards and practices with emphasis on child rights, girls equality, gender transformation and/or gender issues

 

Skills

  • Fluency in spoken and written Arabic and English, and general communication skills
  • Computer literacy, with high proficiency in the use of standard office software applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint);
  • Stakeholder management, negotiation skills, and working effectively with others
  • Proven ability to work creatively, innovatively and effectively with limited direct supervision
  • Strong organisational skills, time management and attention to details
  • Comfortable managing multiple tasks, works well under pressure, and has problem-solving capacities
  • Track record of delivering results
  • Strong analytical skills

 

Knowledge

  • Capacity building approaches
  • A sound understanding of humanitarian and development issues
  • Demonstrated knowledge of influencing in complex environments (security, conflict, drought affected etc.)
  • Feminist and gender equality concepts
  • Theories of change and able to support programme reporting adequately
