 Background:

CHILD SAFEGUARDING: (select only one)

Level 3:  the post holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in one month or more or overnight) because they work country programs; or are visiting country programs; or because they are responsible for implementing the police checking/vetting process staff.

 

ROLE PURPOSE: 

We are currently seeking a skilled and passionate individual to join our Advocacy, Campaigns, Communication, and Media (ACCM) Team as a Media and Communication Officer. This position, based in Sudan, will focus on collecting compelling data through case studies, crafting press releases in both English and Arabic, and ensuring seamless coordination with the regional office and the Global Media Unit (GMU) to spotlight the challenges and stories from the ground. 

In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.

 



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

Key Areas of Accountability:

  • Media:
  • Write newsworthy press releases and gather content in liaison with country office staff Regional Media Manager to generate information/story angles for circulation to the local national, regional and international news media, and ensure country office sign off on all media plans and products
  • Generate media coverage in national and international media in line with our organisational priorities with a focus on prioritised humanitarian contexts and new crises
  • Working with the Regional Media Manager and Global Media Unit, help to coordinate International Press Trips and media visits to Suda
  • Establish and maintain direct communication with local, national, and international media outlets, journalists, and correspondents in Sudan to ensure Save the Children's messages effectively reach their intended audiences.
  • Act as the media focal point for queries related to program implementation, both internally and externally.
  • Contribute to the development of a strategy and guidelines to guide the engagement of the country office with the media.
  • Update and maintain media contact lists, ensuring accuracy and relevance.
  • Track and monitor interviews and media coverage of the Save the Children Sudan Country Program.
  • Support in establishing proactive and beneficial relationships with media outlets that can help advance Save the Children's engagement in promoting children's rights.

Communication:

  • Creation of High-Quality Written Content:
  • Develop and produce impactful written content in English and Arabic.
  • Under the guidance of the ACCM Manager, collaborate with the ACCM team, other Save the Children departments, and civil society partners to support the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the ACCM strategy.
  • Support the development and presentation of visual content for articles, stories, photos, messaging, fact sheets, and multimedia for both internal and external audiences.
  • Contribute to the development of a comprehensive communications and media plan, capturing the priorities of actions and products for the country office.
  • Coordinate the production of compelling photo stories, case studies, and audio-visual materials from the field, adhering to Save the Children International policies and procedures.
  • Work closely with program teams to plan, organize, and undertake issue-based or program/sector-specific advocacy events, conferences, workshops, etc.

 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, Journalism, or a related field. 

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

 

Essential Desireable

  • Proven experience in writing press releases, developing case studies, and engaging with media outlets. 
  • Proven media engagement experience, interviews, etc. 
  • Excellent writing and storytelling skills in both English and Arabic. 
  • Strong research and data collection skills. 

Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
