 Background:

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), an impartial, neutral and independent organisation striving to protect and assist the victims of war and internal violence, has been working in Sudan since 1978. The ICRC is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated person to fill the position of Communication Officer 2 in Damazin.

Purpose: 

The Communication Officer 2 is the focal point for communication, community engagement, and international humanitarian law for Damazin sub-delegation, and in support to the different operational teams. 

S/he helps position the ICRC by conducting presentations, developing proper communication tools, collecting operational relevant information, gathering content (AV, photos, and stories), accompanying the teams to do community engagement in support of the operations and supporting international humanitarian law and human rights law training with different key audiences. 

S/he develops a relevant communication network (journalists and influencers). In close coordination with the Cooperation Field officer, s/he will liaise with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society on topics related to communication. 



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Compiles content and shares it for timely posting/publishing on required internal and external platforms. 
  • Ensures that the Sub-delegation’s network of interlocutors in the media is regularly updated on the activities of the ICRC and that the network is maintained and expanded.
  • Contributes to the public and digital communication and prevention objectives in line with the priorities of the sub-delegation and/or the delegation’s communication and prevention strategy. 
  • Carries out and evaluates relevant activities and adapts supporting tools with respect to public and digital communication, building Sudanese Red Crescent Society public communications capacity, ICRC campaigns, and information analysis/environment scanning. 
  • With The head of sub-delegation, defines operational communication, community engagement, and prevention 
  • Supports the Head of sub-delegation and (when necessary) the Communication/Prevention Manager in networking with relevant media, and relevant persons for public and digital communication purposes, including AV producers, artists and photographers, and influencers, among others that have an impact and/or public communication role. 
  • Works to enhance ICRC acceptance and promote ICRC principles, IHL, and other legal norms, gives visibility to the humanitarian situation of the people affected by violence, creates links with communities and different relevant target audiences, and addresses any other communication needs of the delegation. 
  • Follows political, security, military, and humanitarian developments, as well as other issues related to the ICRC's reputation/perception and capacity to operate, contributes to their analysis, and conducts social media monitoring/environment scanning activities as required.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • University degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as communications, political science or journalism.
  • Minimum 3 years’ work experience in a field relevant to communication and/or prevention (preferably with the ICRC).
  • Experience in an ICRC operation and IHL knowledge is an asset.
  • Sound knowledge of the political, social, and media environment in Sudan.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English and Arabic.
  • Computer skills (proficiency in MS Office); familiarity with digital communication tools.
  • Proficiency in IHL terminology, Communication, Interpretation, Writing and editing, Capacity building and Networking
  • Strong knowledge of traditional and social media environments as well as writing and communication skills
  • Skilled in the following competencies: Leadership, Accountability, People management, Teamwork and collaboration, Representing the ICRC, Beneficiary, and client focused.
