Main Purpose of Job: 

 

Under the supervision of the Health Manger and the Emergency Response Coordinator, the Nutrition Officer will be responsible for the planning, implementation, and monitoring of the lifesaving health & nutrition program activities in Medani state in all relevant localities. The Nutrition Officer will work with other senior staff of the health team as well as with Field Manager, environmental health, supply chain, human resource, and finance department to ensure effective implementation of the integrated health program. The Nutrition Officer will be based in Medani Town and will need to undertake daily/weekly visits to the field sites in Wad Medani, Alkamleen, Al Jezira East localities and throughout the state.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

       Programme Management 

  • Manage and supervise all IRC Nutrition activities.
  • Ensure that staff abides with IRC\MoH protocol, and guidelines.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of Nutrition surveys every as raised in coordination with Senior Nutrition Officer and local partners in the field.
  • Take lead of the IRC nutrition team and prepare work plans / schedules for nutrition activities.
  • Anticipate program needs to ensure that all Nutrition supplies are procured in a timely fashion and in coordination with Senior Nutrition officer at Khartoum.
  • Assist with logistical support such as the preparation of relevant Nutrition register books, forms and other supplies for the programme. 
  • Co-ordinate nutrition activities with the other IRC health, WASH, and other related sectors as relevant to ensure nutrition is integrated. 
  • Conduct regular monitoring visits to field sites as per weekly plan (using monitoring tool) in IRC Nutrition.
  • Monitor the progress of all malnourished children in the CMAM program through standard indicators (morbidities and mortalities, referrals, defaulters and discharge of children).
  • Ensure the referral of all severely malnourished children to the SCs or hospitals. Always encourage mothers to take their children to the SC and always work with the team to find solutions to problems that prevent mothers to do so. Should the circumstance allowed for keeping severely malnourished in the TSFP, the child should be closely monitored in OTP.
  • Identify problems and constraints of the programme and recommend appropriate solutions. Report any difficulties in program implementation to the Health Manager and to the Khartoum Senior Nutrition Officer.
  • Organize monthly meetings with team at the center to discuss work progress, constraints, and recommendations.
  • Advise on disciplinary procedures for staff, when necessary, in conjunction with the Health Manager and Khartoum Senior Nutrition Officer.
  • Keep the Khartoum Senior Nutrition appraised of all activities taking in the programme site. To ensure regular communicate with Khartoum nutrition team.
  • Ensure proper storage of therapeutic foods and distribution to the beneficiaries.

       Staff Training:

  • Identify staff training needs and respond by either implementing internal training where appropriate or identify external training courses in liaison with Nutrition Officer at Khartoum.
  • Devise and plan nutrition-oriented training program for IRC health staff in co-ordination with the Khartoum Nutrition Officer and Health Manager in.
  • Provide technical support where necessary to all NNGOs running feeding programmes in coordination with SMoH.
  • Attend any other training as recommended.

       Health Education

  • Ensure that appropriate health and nutrition education is provided to and understood by all mothers/ beneficiaries with particular focus on mothers of malnourished children. 
  • Organize community nutrition education sessions in coordination with the nutrition and community health volunteer teams.

Analysis of statistics and Report Writing

  • Provide weekly\monthly progress reports and statistics for the TSFP\OTP and all Nutrition activities and liaise regularly with the Senior Nutrition Officer on the progress of the program. 
  • Analyze the monthly TSFP and OTP statistics and interpret and compare it with standard indicators. 
  • Document all population/beneficiaries target figures for different nutrition activities. 
  • Ensure proper documentation and filing of the programme’s activities.
  • Assist in providing information for donor reports and proposal writing.

       Liaison

  • Co-ordinate all IRC nutrition works in partnership with the MoH, WFP, UNICEF, and any other implementing partners in the field. 
  • Work closely with MoH nutrition department and provide capacity building for the department. 

       General

  • Cooperate with other members of the IRC team and develop a good working relationship with the fellow colleagues.
  • To maintain confidentiality and enhance IRC’s reputation by acting in a professional and responsible manner.
  • To carry out any other duties as assigned by the health Manager/Senior Nutrition Officer.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition Science or related field, with valid practice license in Sudan.   
  • At least 2 years of experience in Nutrition Program Implementation. 
  • Familiar with CMAM protocol & guidelines.
