 Background:

Under the overall supervision of FAO Representative in Sudan and direct supervision of the FAO Project Coordinator, FAO Taskforce and Lead Technical Officers at FAO HQ and Regional Offices, in close collaboration with FRL TF other stakeholders, the nationa remote sensing expert will be in charge of the following activities:



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  1. Provide technical support to the implementation of this REDD+ readiness support, with regards to the development of activity data for the construction of a national FRL for Sudan and the training of the Activity Data (AD) Team established from the Remote Sensing and Seismology Authority (RSSA) and Forest National Corporation (FNC).
  2. Assist the remote sensing international consultant in the preparation of the technical proposal on the development of the activity data (AD) for the purpose of the construction of a national FRL taking into consideration national circumstances and Sudan’s experience with preparation of the sub-national FRL (2020)
  3. Assist the international remote sensing consultant in the training and capacity building of the AD team members from the RSSA and FNC on the methodologies for developing historical activity data for FREL/FRL including for land cover, land cover change maps if appropriate, accuracy/uncertainty assessment if appropriate, or an ensemble approach applied on a dense grid where different algorithms are combined to assess a forest change probability curve (Danenius) to be used for stratification using remote sensing.
  4. Lead the remote sensing team in the develop of the AD based on the technical proposal mentioned above and follow-up with the international consultant on advancing and completing this work within its plan timeframe.
  5. Manage the remote sensing data, exchange of data and communication among the team and with the international consultant.
  6. Assist the international consultant in finalizing the activity data (merge and intersection) and the accuracy assessment.
  7. Provide the international consultant with the information and data needed.
  8. Assist the international consultant in the preparation of the final report of the AD development. 
  9. Support the validation of the final report of the activity data
  10. Perform other related duties as required.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Education:
  • Advanced university degree in forestry, Surveying, GIS, Cartography, Geography, or Natural Resources, 
Experience:
  • 5 years’ quantitative research experience, with a strong emphasis on remote sensing data analysis and spatial analysis and detailed report preparation.
  • Experience in Land cover land cover change maps specifically for FREL/FRL purpose.
Other:
  • Various GIS automation tasks using scripting languages
  •  GIS system analysis and Design
  • Have the ability to work at a fast pace and meet deadlines;
  • Good proficiency of English both written and spoken
