NATIONAL FOREST INVENTORY-NATIONAL EXPERT

 Background:

Under the overall supervision of FAO Representative in Sudan and direct supervision of the FAO Project Coordinators, FAO Taskforce and Lead Technical Officers at FAO HQ and Regional Offices, the NFI expert will be in charge of the following activities:



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Inventory Department of FNC and NFMS/MRV unit in the implementation of the REDD+ readiness request, in particular activities 2.2.2.1 and 2.2.2.2. 
  • Assist the international NFI consultant in the preparation of a technical proposal based on the review of the NFI-2017 data to identify gaps and needs for improving sample coverage and representation, in particular on how to improve the representation of the forest landuse strata including possible methods of conducting measurement in the inaccessible sample plots.
  • Conduct consultation with FRL TF and relevant NFI experts on the technical proposal mentioned above and take into consideration, as appropriate, their input, 
  • Prepare a plan based on the above-mentioned technical proposal, which includes methodologies, composition of NFI team and a timeframe to conduct filed measurements in the sample units as recommended in the technical proposal mentioned above.
  • Lead the NFI team in conducting the field measurements according to the plan mentioned above. 
  • Work with the NFI department to conduct data entry, quality check (cleaning) and recalculation of the NFI results to derive improved estimates of the emission factors. 
  • Assist the international NFI consultant in organizing training workshop for NFI experts of FNC and other relevant NFI experts on data cleansing and calculation of NFI results 
  • Assist the international consultant in the preparation of the revised NFI report
  • Assist the international consultant in the preparation of an emission factor (EF) database for the national FRL
  • Facilitate the validation of the revised NFI report. 
  • Perform any other related duties as required.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Education:
  • Advanced university degree in forestry, or natural science of relevance 

 

Experience:
  • 5 years of experience.
  • Experience in national forest inventory (NFI) and carbon stock assessment
  • Experience in global REDD process and Sudan’s REDD program; 
  • Experience in GHG inventory of the forest and land use sector 
  • Good proficiency of English both written and spoken; and 
  • Experience in the data entry, quality check, cleansing and calculation of NFI filed data

 

Other:
  • Ability to lead NFI teams in the field measurements.
