Communication Officer

 Background:

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), an impartial, neutral, and independent organization striving to protect and assist the victims of war and internal violence, has been working in Sudan since 1978. The ICRC is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated person to fill the position of Communication Officer 2 in Al-Geneina.

Purpose:  

The Communication Officer is the focal point for public and digital communication, community engagement and supports international humanitarian law and human rights law trainings with different key audiences for West Darfur. Helps positioning the ICRC and disseminating international law by conducting presentations, developing proper communication and training tools, collects relevant humanitarian information, gather content (AV, Photos and stories), develops a communication network (journalists, leaders, influencers and institutions) and it is the liaison with the Sudanese Red Crescent for communication. contributes to setting and implementing communication and prevention priorities, objectives and strategies and supports the orientation, planning, monitoring and evaluation of Darfur’s public and operational communication activities. In addition, s/he will support the team based in Zalingei as well as all other Darfur structures when/if needed.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Contributes to the communication and prevention objectives in line with the priorities of the field sub-structure(s) and/or the delegation’s communication and prevention strategy.
  • Carries out and evaluates relevant activities and adapts supporting tools with respect to operational, public and digital communication, as well as community engagement, building National Red Cross/Red Crescent Society public communications capacity, ICRC campaigns and information analysis/environment scanning.
  • Supports the Head(s) of Sub-Structure and the Communication/Prevention Manager in networking with relevant media, inside and outside the country, relevant persons for public and digital communication purposes
  • Scans key issues in traditional and social media and shares this with the Sub-structure on regular analyses of developments that can create or impact the humanitarian situation.
  • Organize media events (workshops, media days on specific events, exhibitions, etc.) to promote the activities of the ICRC and to promote international law, especially in West Darfur, and enhance ICRC image and reputation.
  • Supervise the production of all printed and digital material required by the different departments in the Sub-Structure to ensure their compliance with ICRC visual identity standards.
  • Informs the ICRC’s target audience about the institution, its mandate, and its activities independently, as well as International Humanitarian Law (IHL),
  • Contribute and join field trips with other departments to both documents and hold dissemination on the ICRC mandate to the communities.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • University degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as communications, political science or journalism.
  • Minimum 3 years’ work experience in a field relevant to communication and/or prevention (preferably with the ICRC).
  • Experience in an ICRC operation an asset.
  • IHL knowledge an asset.
  • Sound knowledge of the political, social and media environment in Sudan.
  • Fluent spoken and written English and Arabic
  • Computer skills (proficiency in MS Office); familiarity with digital communication tools.
  • Proficiency in IHL terminology, Communication, Interpretation, Writing and editing, Capacity building and Networking
  • Strong knowledge of traditional and social media environment as well as writing and communication skills
  • Skilled in the following competencies: Leadership, Accountability, People management, Teamwork & Collaboration, Representing the ICRC, Beneficiary & Client focused.
