Alight

Alight came to Sudan in 2004 as one of the first humanitarian responders to the emergency needs of some 500,000 war-affected IDPs and host populations in the Tulus and Gereida corridors in South Darfur. In 2014, Alight expanded services its reach to include East Darfur. Today, Alight serves displaced populations and host communities in Kassala, Gedaref, West Kordofan, and East and South Darfur states. Alight provides lifesaving humanitarian action, recovery, and development services in these five states, with a country office based in Khartoum.

Field offices in Kassala, Gedaref, Nyala, El Daein,serve as the key state hubs for program delivery. Alight’s staff is more than 99 percent Sudanese, with nearly 800 full-time staff joined by over 400 incentive and community health and protection workers in delivering lifesaving programs and durable solutions in Sudan.

Alight is registered in Sudan and works closely with Federal and State Line Ministries to carry out its humanitarian and development mandates.

 Background:

ALIGHT (ARC) Sudan Program started in 2004 in response to the emergency needs of some 500,000 war-affected IDPs and host populations in the Tulus and Gereida corridors in South Darfur. In 2014, ALIGHT expanded services into underserved villages in the East Darfur.  The overall aim of the program is to improve the well-being of the target populations by addressing their immediate humanitarian needs and contributing to long-term community stabilization.

 

In conjunction with the Head Office in Khartoum, the field offices in Nyala, South Darfur and Ed Daein, Adilla East Darfur, Kasalla and Gadarif support the delivery of primary health care services at 33 rehabilitated community clinics, five reproductive health units and Two BeMONC facilities.  Water and sanitation services, including the construction/rehabilitation of boreholes, water yards, household and institutional latrines and hygiene promotion messages, are also delivered in over 70 conflict-affected communities. A small agriculture component assists resettling IDPs, Refugees and host populations with seeds, tools and extension services to grow their own food. ALIGHT programs enable resiliency in rural communities in both regions in the face of recurring conflicts and natural disasters such as drought, flooding and environmental degradation. The goal is to aid transition to early recovery in Darfur, in an equitable and environmentally sustainable manner.

 

With an annual budget of between $9-12m, the Sudan Program has 10 expatriates and over 600 national staff some of who are seconded from the line Ministries of the Sudan government

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

  • The psychiatrist advises the prescribing medical providers on appropriate medications and other treatment strategies.
  • The psychiatrist will be responsible for overseeing Mental health and psychosocial service delivery at Alight’s health facilities at all refugee camps in East Sudan (60% Tunaydbah,20% Um Rakoba and 20% other refugee camps) including consultations, diagnosis and treatment of clients in accordance to the MoH protocols. He/She will be responsible to build the capacity of the health facility staff to improve mental health services.

 

 

 



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assess and screen patients by conducting psychiatric evaluations, including interviews, medical histories, physical exams, observations, and psychological testing
  • Analyze data and results of assessments to diagnose patients
  • Prescribe and administer medications according to diagnosis
  • Monitor patients to determine efficacy and potential side effects of medications
  • Develop a treatment plan, measure progress against the plan, and make adjustments as needed
  • Provide crisis management intervention as needed
  • Complete all necessary clinical documentation in an accurate and timely manner and ensure they are protected for confidentiality purpose.
  • Collaborate with a broader team of physicians, psychologists, and nurses to assess and adjust treatment plans
  • Coordinate and communicate with case managers and other stakeholders about treatment and care
  • Supervises and provides overall leadership for delivery of quality mental health and psychological services and MHPSS departments.
    • Maintains appropriate records in collaboration with the Pharmacist/ Pharmacy Assistant on a weekly/monthly/quarterly basis. Regularly follows up the clinic requirement of all drugs, medical and non-medical supplies.
  • Support and promote integration of MHPSS into PHCCs and link protection related cases to appropriate services
    • Ensure rational use of Antipsychotic and other MHP drug supply chain in the facility and monitor the consumption to avoid /limit drugs expiring in Alight stock.
    • Organizes on the job training for technical health facility staff.
    • Organizes and supervise MHPSS activities in the clinic and at community level.
    • In-charge of the operation of a cost sharing system in the unit and economic management of drugs and other supplies where applicable.
    • Coordinate with Village/Camp Health Committees / Local Health Committees on Mental health related activities in the community to improve community participation and ownership as well as caring and supportive environment to patients.
    • Coordinate with a clinical Psychologists and psychosocial officers to deliver quality Mental health care.
    • participate in and co-chair of MHPSS forum and meetings and share meeting minutes.
    • submit weekly, monthly and quarterly report of MHPSS activities and interventions.
    • Performs any other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Current and valid board certification in psychiatry from a recognized university or medical doctor with certified training in mental health with full registration and valid practicing license with relevant professional body (Sudan Medical Council) received training on mhGAP.
  • A minimum of 3 years post registration (clinical) work experience
  • Excellent knowledge and familiarity with current DSM criteria
  • Familiar with crisis assessment tools and techniques
  • Strong working knowledge of general psychiatric principles and practices
  • Ability to cope with stress
  • Ability to work well as part of a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team
  • Willingness to work in unstable environments
  • Should be able to speak, read and write English and Arabic.
  • Have good communication skills
  • Experience in rural health center/ hospital setting
  • Computer knowledge
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal relations.
  • Familiar with health information system.
