 Background:

The International Republican Institute (IRI) is a Washington, D.C. based nonpartisan, non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing democracy worldwide by developing political parties, civic institutions, open elections, democratic governance, and the rule of law. IRI provides technical assistance in the areas of political party strengthening, developing civic institutions and open elections, promoting democratic governance and advancing the rule of law.

In Sudan, as a partner in the Improving Electoral and Political Process for Change in Sudan program, International Republican Institute works with partners to enhance the responsiveness and accountability of governance institutions, improve political party inclusiveness and capacity to conduct issue-based, citizen-responsive campaigns, and to enhance the participation of citizens, civil society, media and other stakeholders in electoral and political processes.

IRI needs a local Accountant to perform programmatic duties on a full-time employment basis.

The Accountant will implement IRI’s accounting functions and day-to-day operations. S/he ensures compliance with accounting principles and provides timely and accurate financial reporting to all internal and external stakeholders.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Reviews and records field office expenses in JAMIS Prime and ensures that advance payments are reconciled;
  • Manages field office payments, vendor and partner inquiries and invoice processing;
  • Compiles monthly rolling budgets for the field office, and monitors daily expenditures, reconciliations and bank transactions;
  • Reviews, prepares, processes and records payroll for local employees;
  • Handles field office procurement processes in compliance with IRI’s and funder’s requirements;
  • Fulfills IRI’s and funder’s reporting requirements in an accurate and timely manner;
  • Maintains local financial records of the program as well as office files according to the IRI policies;
  • Responsible for preparing all statutory returns (e.g. VAT, NSSF, NHIF, PAYE) as required by the respective government authorities;
  • Ensures that field office property is kept securely and the office inventory us updated regularly;
  • Maintains an understanding of funder and IRI policies and procedures related to grant compliance and oversight.
  • Ensure that field office staff as well as partners have a strong understanding of IRI’s accounting policies and procedures and provides training as needed;
  • Travels from time to time to support field office accounting and procurement needs; and
  • Any other duties assigned in support of IRI’s work in Sudan and abroad.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A university graduate with a Bachelor's degree, preferably in Accounting, Finance or a related subject;
  • A minimum 3 years’ relevant professional experience in an accounting environment, preferably with an international non-profit organization or U.S. government donor-funded project.

Requirements:

  • Command of general accounting principles and bookkeeping;
  • Experience with accounting software such as Jamis Prime, Quickbooks, Quicken, Costpoint, etc.;
  • Proven capacity to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities simultaneously and under tight deadlines;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic is required;
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency and knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite and basic accounting software packages;
  • Organizational and communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently or within a team;
  • Must be able to travel independently;
  • Must have the legal right to work in Sudan. Visas, resident permits and work permits are the applicant’s and staff member’s responsibility.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Completed or ongoing graduate studies or a finalist for CPA or other relevant professional certification;
  • Knowledge of and experience with U.S. government funder rules and regulations;
  • Experience with JAMIS Prime accounting system.
