Muslim Aid is a faith-based British international charity that provides help to people who are victims of natural disasters, conflict or suffering from poverty, hunger, disease and illiteracy. It was established in the United Kingdom in 1985 in response to the drought in the Horn of Africa. Muslim Aid's Sudan Country office (MASCO) was set up in 1991 in response to the strategic need and to enable the continuation of effective aid work in the country. Currently, Muslim Aid is implementing projects in Kassala, Central Darfur and Red Sea State , Algazieera State , Gdarief State in Sudan.

 Background:

The Research Consultant – National will work on a fixed term consultancy to participate in a research project funded by ELRHA, focusing on understanding the barriers to inclusion faced by people with disabilities and older people in WASH humanitarian programming. The title of this research project is “Landscape Analysis of Barriers to inclusion faced by people with disabilities (PWDs) and older people (OP) in WASH humanitarian programming in Golo and Nertiti Localities, Central Darfur State of Sudan”.

The research design for this project will involve a range of methodologies (including accessibility audit, Policy Analysis, Participatory Ethnographic Evaluation and Research – PEER, and Participatory Learning Action – PLA) to identify key barriers faced by PWDs and OP in accessing WASH services.  The project will be implemented between January 21, 2020 and January 20, 2021.

This Research Consultant – National will serve as the in-country (Sudan) technical lead on the implementation of the research project. This consultancy will constitute of a total of 40 of working days, implemented over the course of an estimated period of three working months. The overall technical research lead for this research project will be the International Research Consultant based out of Coventry, UK.

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Advisory Committee Meetings (2 days – tentative)         

  • Assist project team in preparing information including tools/research design in presentable packages for the to the advisory committee
  • Participate in advisory committee meetings and incorporate recommendations by the committee in the modification and development of tools, research design, and analysis.

 

Methodology and Vocabulary Development (2 days – tentative)

  • Contribute towards the development and review of the methodology and vocabulary developed by the International Research Consultant.
  • Ensure methodology and vocabulary is contextually relevant.

 

 

 

 

Research Tools Development and Data Collection (20 days – tentative)

  • Lead the development of the research tools based on approved methodology and vocabulary developed by the International Research Consultant. All tools developed will be reviewed and approved by the International Research Consultant.
  • Carry out the accessibility audit.
  • Lead the testing of the tools for validity and reliability
  • Lead the translation of tools, as necessary
  • Development the data collection plan and obtain approval from International Research Consultant on the plan.
  • Lead the data collection team in the implementation of the data collection plan
  • Participate in the literature review as part of the policy analysis.  

 

Capacity Building (7 days – tentative)

  • Develop training material for project team and data collection team
  • Train local partners, project team, and data collection team on the research methodology, research ethical guidelines, and research tools.
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to data collection team during data collection process.

 

Analysis and Data Triangulation (5 days – tentative)

  • Lead the translation of collected data
  • Conduct data triangulation and first round of data analysis based on the analysis plan developed by the international research consultant.  

 

Reporting, presentation and dissemination – (4 working days – tentative)

  • Contribute to write of relevant articles presenting research findings
  • Develop presentations for the presentations of the findings.
  • Lead the presentation of findings of the study in local dissemination workshops and events held in Sudan and regionally.

 


 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Muslim Aid is looking for a dynamic, creative and result-oriented consultant with

  • Ability to design and implement complex mixed-method academic and practical research
  • Communication and presentation skills, for example; ability to present findings of the research to in national and regional events.
  • Experience/understanding of humanitarian and development programming, especially Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programming, and programming focusing on PWDs and OP
  •  Ability to produce clear and timely written communications in the form of research reports and academic articles.
  • Research and analytical skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and effectively manage own time and lead a data collection team.
  • Ability to manage a multitask workload and be flexible to altering priorities in order to respond to changing demands.
  • Ability to travel to the and work in IDP settings of Golo and Nertiti localities in Central Darfur State
  • Experience in training and building the capacity of others, especially on research methodology, ethics and tools.
  • Ability to live and work well with others in a team situation.
  • IT skills: knowledge and experience of relevant research software including STATA, SPSS, and any other required
  • Demonstrate a commitment to gender, diversity and inclusivity

  3. Experience research methodologies for this assignment including PEER, PLA, Policy analysis and accessibility audits.
  4. Proven experience of writing research reports and articles. Please provide articles published in reputable journals, if any.
  5. Experience managing data collection teams Experience in leading workshops and training programs.
  6. Experience in developing and testing research tools
