DRC has been present in Sudan since 2004, delivering life-saving programming in protection, emergency response, shelter, food security and livelihoods, disaster risk reduction, camp management, and humanitarian mine action. DRC has implemented projects in Central Darfur, South Darfur, South Kordofan, Gedaref, Kassala, and Khartoum states. Sudan hosts one of the largest displaced populations in Africa, with over 3.7 million internally displaced people and over 1.1 million refugees from South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Central African Republic, Chad, Yemen and Syria. Against a background of political crisis, Sudan faces economic and social turmoil, with sharp increases in food and energy costs, further exacerbated by disease outbreaks and ongoing conflict.

Overall purpose of the role

The Protection Assistant is responsible for implementing community-based protection and Protection monitoring activities . The Protection Assistant is expected to develop positive relationships with individual person of concern , community based Protection Networks (CBPNs) Community outreach Volunteers (CoVs) and focal points and other stakeholders so as to ensure to the efficiency of DRC’s outreach strategy and overall intervention.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

General Management

  • Ensure the community structure in the targeted implantations areas  is in place and active, follow up regularly on the performance of community outreach volunteers (CoVs) and community-based protection networks (CBPNs) and conduct regular meetings with CBPNs.
  •  participate in the CBPNs establishment,   orientation and training on Code of Conduct and PSEA to newly formed networks .
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of protection monitoring activities. To this end, support the Protection Officers and Team Leader in producing and updating monthly work plans and carry out Rapid Protection Assessment as well as Protection Monitoring activities at both HH and community level.
  • Organize and engage CBPNs and/or Community Mobilizers in Protection Monitoring activities with the aim of collecting qualitative and quantitative data on the protection risks in the target areas and contribute to drafting regular protection monitoring reports.
  • With the support of the Protection team leader and the protection manager , engage with the community and other stakeholder in identify risks that faced by most vulnerable in order to implement community protection assistance based on identified risk and threats with clear impact.
  • Ensure that individuals in need of protection services and/or assistance, identified through outreach and other activities, are timely and adequately referred to the relevant services. Conduct regular and systematized follow-up of all referred cases to ensure adequate service provision, reassess needs and potentially identify any new trends.
  • Ensure the CoVs and CBPNs are in place and active, make regular follow up and organize different activities (Awareness sessions / HHs / awareness campaign ) and hold regular meetings with them.
  • Receive individual needs for referrals (mobile or in field ) and take proper actions including writing referrals and provision of accurate information.
  • Follow the referral pathways between DRC and other humanitarian actors and make follow up of the issues raised to ensure feedback is provided on time.
  • Ensure proper recording of complaints received and actions taken and provide timely and accurate data and information to data entry and analysis.
  • Prepare reports (weekly/monthly) on the activities done and submit timely to Protection
    Team Leader 
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of protection monitoring activities. To this end, support the Protection Officers and Team Leader in producing and updating monthly work plans and carry out Rapid Protection Assessment as well as Protection Monitoring activities at both HH and community level.

GENERAL

  • Commitments: DRC has a Humanitarian Accountability Framework, outlining its global
    accountability commitments. All staff are required to contribute to the achievement of this
    framework into the work of DRC .

Other:

  • Ensure respect of DRC Code of Conduct
  • Participate in training and coaching as required on protection topics, the relevant SOPs and the data filing and storing procedures. 

Any other duties relating to the nature of the job as directed by the Protection Project Manager


 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Minimum 1-2 years of relevant work experience in protection in humanitarian setting
  • Experience in facilitation of CBP/ PM activities and the delivery of community programs to vulnerable groups
  • Understanding of protection principles, protection minimum standards .
  • Excellent IT skills (Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word and PowerPoint)
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and prioritize the safety and dignity of beneficiaries at all times.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Fluency in Arabic
  • Ability to communicate and write in English.
  • Familiarity/prior experience with humanitarian field  and its persons of concern (including internally displaced persons, returnees, refugees) would be a distinct advantage; excellent knowledge and understanding of local communities and customary rules;
  • Full respect for client/organization confidentiality;
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and respect for people with special needs and other vulnerability;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural context as a flexible and respectful team player;
  • Excellent writing, reporting, and analytical skills;
  • Familiarity with international protection and human rights legal standards, with special emphasis on women 
  • Punctuality and respect for applicable rules and procedures;
  • Self-motivation, goal/result-orientation and team work;
  • Flexibility, creativeness, tolerance and maturity;

Computer/IT literacy (OS Windows/Vista/Linux, MS (Word, Excel in particular) Internet etc.)

Education background:

 

Essential qualification

  • University degree in social sciences, international law, humanitarian affairs or similar field.

Language :

Fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic
