Compensation and Benefits Manager

Alight came to Sudan in 2004 as one of the first humanitarian responders to the emergency needs of some 500,000 war-affected IDPs and host populations in the Tulus and Gereida corridors in South Darfur. In 2014, Alight expanded services its reach to include East Darfur. Today, Alight serves displaced populations and host communities in Kassala, Gedaref, West Kordofan, and East and South Darfur states. Alight provides lifesaving humanitarian action, recovery, and development services in these five states, with a country office based in Khartoum.

Field offices in Kassala, Gedaref, Nyala, El Daein,serve as the key state hubs for program delivery. Alight’s staff is more than 99 percent Sudanese, with nearly 800 full-time staff joined by over 400 incentive and community health and protection workers in delivering lifesaving programs and durable solutions in Sudan.

Alight is registered in Sudan and works closely with Federal and State Line Ministries to carry out its humanitarian and development mandates.

 Background:

Alight, formerly the American Refugee Committee (ARC), is an international non-governmental organization providing integrated health; nutrition; and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH); food security and livelihoods; community protection; and peacebuilding services to nearly 2 million people annually.

PURPOSE

Under the supervision of the Head of HR, the Compensation and Benefits Manager is responsible for defining the organization's compensation strategy and ensuring its implementation. He/she is responsible for the various components of the compensation package to make our compensation system attractive and to reward performance. He/she works with the field team and other departments to ensure that the payroll process is conducted in compliance with the legislation and in a timely manner. He/she defines policies and procedures for salary review and for related items such as overtime and leave.

He/she monitors market trends to adapt employee benefits to the market. And acts as a compensation system expert by providing advice to managers and to the Senior Leadership Team.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

Compensation and Benefits strategy

  • Define the new compensation policy of Alight in collaboration with the Head of the department
  • Challenge the current remuneration system by proposing innovative and motivating remuneration packages
  • Identify competitive and relevant benefits that can be offered to employees in compliance with the law, our resources, and the expressed needs of employees
  • Analyze the context of the country and formulate recommendations to adapt our compensation and benefits system to the evolution of the economic situation
  • Define policies related to the compensation and keep them updated: salary review, overtime, leave, per diem….
  • Participate in the review of budgets prior to submission to donors for the personnel costs and anticipate any future costs to be covered
  • Ensure internal fairness in terms of salaries and implement all necessary measures to reduce internal inequalities

 

Support the HR field team in the payroll process

  • Ensure that the payroll is completed on time each month.
  • Check the accuracy of data transmitted by the field before validation and request for payment
  • Ensure that Alight respects its legal obligations in terms of social contributions
  • Provide advice to the field teams regarding salary and validate each new offer in accordance with our salary scale
  • Validate the final settlement calculation and ensure that terminated employees receive their final settlement within the legal timeframe
  • Work in conjunction with the finance and compliance departments in the payroll process and foraudits.

 

Payroll Software

  • Serve as a reference in the use of the payroll software
  • Update the parameters according to the evolution of the regulations
  • Train each new user
  • Be the developer's focal point for maintenance and upgrades

 

Monitoring

  • Monitor the labor market and share recommendations to maintain our attractiveness for new recruitments
  • Actively participate in HR networking with other NGO’s to share good practices regarding compensation and benefits
  • Monitor Alight HR indicators to anticipate any HR issues requiring corrective action

 


 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Professional experience

  • At least 5 years of experience as a compensation and benefits manager or in a related role.
  • Hands-on experience with HRIS or payroll software
  • A previous experience with an NGO, an asset

 

Educational background and specific skills required

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources management, business administration, or a related field.
  • Extensive knowledge of benefits and compensation programs, policies, procedures, and applicable legislation.
  • Strong computer skills in Excel
  • Expert in Sudanese labor law and Taxation system
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

 

Languages

  • Excellent verbal and written communication in English and Arabic.
