Audio Visual Specialist
UNEP
United Nations Environment Programme UNEP

 No. of Post: 1
Duty Station: Khartoum, Sudan with frequent travel to Darfur
 Closing Date: 08 June 2022

 Background:

Background

UNEP Sudan is implementing a second phase of the Wadi El Ku Catchment Management project in North Darfur with support from the European Union. The purpose of this second project phase is to extend and scale up successful interventions, based on the first phase of the project, with the aim of improving local community livelihoods and stemming the negative cycle of environmental degradation and social tensions in the Wadi El Ku.

The Wadi El Ku is situated in a marginal agro-ecological zone. Its proximity to El Fasher, a regional trading hub and home to large populations of IDPs, has increased the demand on land and water beyond the carrying capacity of the environment and the planning capacity of the government.  This, combined with the ongoing conflict, has resulted in degradation of the environment, including deforestation, erosion and soil fertility depletion, and haphazard water management.  Livelihoods have in turn been weakened, setting in motion a negatively reinforcing relationship between environment and economic recovery within and around Wadi El Ku. The purpose of the project is to continue to demonstrate how this negatively reinforcing relationship can be halted and eventually reversed.  It will do so by showing how effective and inclusive natural resource management, based on UNEP's experience in Sudan of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM), can sustain increases in agriculture and related value chain productivity over the long-term while safeguarding ecosystem integrity. Through this project, the overall objective is to demonstrate how the integrated management of natural resources – of water in particular – can establish sustainable and climate resilient livelihoods, reduce natural resource conflicts in North Darfur, and reduce displacement due to loss of livelihoods.
