 Background:

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), an impartial, neutral and independent organisation striving to protect and assist the victims of war and internal violence, has been working in Sudan since 1978. The ICRC is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated person for the following position: Generalist Field Officer in El Geneina.

 

Purpose

The Generalist Field Officer (FO) consequently provides advice on the evolving political and conflict dynamics across West Darfur. S/he regularly analyses any changes in the general operating environment, including the security situation, as a support to teams during their field missions. In addition, s/he contributes to the definition, implementation, and monitoring of several ICRC projects and activities (assistance, cooperation, and communication) when requested.

 



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Contributes in a delegation or sub-structure to implementing (or implements) and following up various field activities, in accordance with objectives.
  • Monitors the humanitarian environment and needs, and analyses the security, socio-economic, cultural and political environment as relevant to the ICRC. Shares relevant information with colleagues and reports any changes in the situation.
  • Contributes to designing projects.
  • Collects, compiles, translates/interprets information about the projects and contributes to written reporting.
  • Participates in internal and external meetings and develops and maintains contacts with municipal/regional authorities, local/regional Red Cross/Red Crescent Society branches and the population.
  • Participates in, and may carry out independently, administrative follow-up of field missions.

 


 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent higher education degree in a humanitarian area, socio-economic development, humanitarian law, human rights or equivalent field Postgraduate or master’s degree is an asset.
  • Very good knowledge of the socio-political environment of the Darfur region, especially West Darfur.
  • Fluent command of English and Arabic (written and spoken). Local language/dialect is an asset.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a humanitarian field, socio-economic development, humanitarian law, human rights or similar position.
  • Confirmed analytical and reporting skills in a similar field of activity.
  • Access to a network of contacts relevant to the ICRC’s operational needs in this context.
  • Very good understanding of key IT tools (Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and excel/database is mandatory. Knowledge of other mapping or database programs a plus).
  • Skilled in the following competencies: Networking & Communication; Adapting & Learning; Responsibility & Autonomy; Communication (ability to express views and ideas); Analysis & Synthesis; Security Management
  • Readiness to spend 50-75% of the time in the field, mainly West Darfur.
  • Excellent public speaker who can easily engage with diverse target audiences.
