We work in the fields of Agriculture for resilience, energy and Rural WASH with markets, gender and climate change cross-cutting all our work.

 

JOB PURPOSE:

The Head of Impact and Influence will be responsible for maintaining the Practical Action’s strategic focus, advocacy roles, sustainability and impact of Practical Action's programmes, by ensuring quality and control mechanisms, the incumbent will work closely with thematic advisors for supporting (agriculture, WASH and energy) programs and knowledge and communication team.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

Leadership and Strategic Alignment

 

  • Lead the development process of Sudan Country Office strategic business plan (SBP), ensuring that change objectives are developed to achieve change in the lives of people that we work with.
  • Lead in the routine quarterly and annual reporting of the SBP, working with thematic leads on evaluating impact against change objective.
  • Ensure detailed understanding of organizational key performance indicators (KPIs) to enable effective tracking of progress on quarterly and annual basis.
  • Ensure that Practical Action’s work draws on learning and innovation and is shared effectively with the wider Practical Action organization.
  • Ensure that Practical Action cross cutting themes on gender and climate technology are embedded in change objectives and measured as part of the organization’s impact.
  • Lead, manage and motivate the impact and thematic team by ensuring that they have clear work objectives and individual/team work plans and receive meaningful feedback on their performance.

 

Delivering Quality

 

  • Responsible for embedding of the Framework for Change into our ways of working in. This involves provision of effective support to ensure systems thinking, gender and inclusion and practices are at the heart of all our work.
  • Lead the development of a range of methodologies and indicators to enable a rigorous assessment of our progress against plans and the impact.
  • Ensure that business development units’ plans adequately define the impact they will make and that they have adequate measures in place to monitor progress, and capture evidence and impact.
  • Provide senior management with a periodic high-level assessment of our impact and our learning, and recommendations on ways to maximise our effectiveness.
  • Work with the Communications Team to share our impact and our learning internally and externally in a compelling way.
  • Oversee the development of infrastructure and culture to capture knowledge, evidence, impact and learning; contributing to capacity building efforts.
  • Working closely with the Thematic Lead- Change Ambition to guide the work of defining impact and participation in Global Change Hub, and Gender Group to ensure that learning, evidence and influencing efforts to contribute to the Change Ambition work across the group.
  • Effectively operationalise Practical Action’s strategy, through programmes which are well resourced and well managed, and that deliver on their expected outcomes.
  • Possess an outward-facing orientation, improving our ability to harness information to enable, influence and increase organisational accountability to meet Practical Action's target.
  •  Have an exciting combination of responsibilities, strengthening our structures to ensure high-quality and efficient delivery in line with agreed objectives, coaching and mentoring staff, and strengthening a culture of monitoring, learning and its impacts.
  • Working closely with thematic advisors (Agriculture, WASH and energy) , communication team and other programs staff, for oversight of key programmatic partnerships and fundraising efforts.
  • Ensure positive relationships across the organisation, working collaboratively and creating buy-in through influence and persuasion.
  • Orient and adapt impacts approaches of knowledge and success and inspirations to different organizational areas.
  • As a member of the senior management team, play a leading role in setting the culture of the organisation and modelling Practical Action’s values.
  • Contribute to senior management team meetings, with accountability for programmatic implementation and impact.
  • Outstanding at building positive relationships. Works collaboratively, creating buy-in through influence and persuasion.
  • Solutions and action-oriented; able to prioritise and focus on results without getting distracted.
  • Strategic planning & operationalisation of strategic plans, Able to manage and oversee complex programmes, including responsibility for planning, reporting and monitoring processes.

 

Influence

 

  • Policy analysis to identify and priorities key target local, Country and international policy processes and agendas
  • Summarizes influencing targets in the Business Plan
  • Designs projects that influence policy making and/or implementation
  • Packages information for targeted audiences with the assistance of the Knowledge and Information Manager for awareness raising and influence against the Country influencing priorities
  • Undertakes the monitoring of all influencing activities against agreed influencing priorities
  • Adapts approaches and builds partnerships and alliances as appropriate
  • Engages in and/or establishes Country and international influencing networks
  • Attends events using project related learning as the core building block of positions and arguments.

 

Strengthening Profile, Generating Funding and Managing Relationships

 

  • Contribute to the proposal development process by leading design workshops that build proposals on overall change objectives and Practical Action’s approach to understanding system change is embedded in design.
  • Ensure that Impact functions and processes are budgeted for in proposals and new funding.
  • Ensure that impact and lessons from program delivery feeds into organizational profile strengthening through stories of change and impact reporting.
  • Participate in learning forums and opportunities to showcase the organization’s impact.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • A Bachelor degree or above in strategic studies, or sustainable development.

 KEY COMPETENCES:

  • Excellent Time management and organization skills
  • Prepared to be flexible, to work under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines

 

ESSENTIAL:

  • Proven senior management and line management experience.
  • Trends and developments within thematic area of work.
  • Ability to oversee budgeting, reporting, planning.
  • Outstanding communication and reporting skills, across the organization and with donors and stakeholders at the highest level.
  • Expertise with project/programs management frameworks, and monitoring.
  • Experience in developing, managing and leading programs within an INGO setting.
  • Experience working on global projects and with people from

 

RELEVANT JOB EXPERIENCE

  • At least 7 years’ INGOs experience strategic management within sustainable development.
