Muslim Aid is a faith-based British international charity that provides help to people who are victims of natural disasters, conflict or suffering from poverty, hunger, disease and illiteracy. It was established in the United Kingdom in 1985 in response to the drought in the Horn of Africa. Muslim Aid's Sudan Country office (MASCO) was set up in 1991 in response to the strategic need and to enable the continuation of effective aid work in the country. Currently, Muslim Aid is implementing projects in Kassala, Central Darfur and Red Sea State , Algazieera State , Gdarief State in Sudan.

 Background:

Health and Nutrition Coordinator will be responsible for implementing health and nutrition activities in Kassala state. He/she will be reporting and reinforcing the capacity of the technical staff through day-to-day supervision, mentoring and coaching as well as training. The Health and Nutrition Coordinator is expected to contribute in building sustainable interventions in promoting integration of nutrition services into the health services package in Kassala state.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Ensure smooth running of Kassala office on a day-to-day basis, Supervising and monitoring the work staff
  • Provide strategic direction, leadership and overall technical and management support to health and nutrition programs operating in Kassala State, including direct and partner implemented activities for key health components to advance the Essential Health Services Package: Primary, reproductive, community health, nutrition, and other identified services.
  • Design and supervise the Health & Nutrition programmes to ensure they are implemented in accordance with Muslim AID standards and regulations.
  • Work closely with the Health and Nutrition team in Kassala state to build relationships with key Health & Nutrition partners and donors to strengthen Muslim Aid Health & Nutrition programmes in Kassala State.
  • Manage work plan and ensure activities are carried out as planned – key activities include clinical training, supportive supervision, community mobilization, use of data for decision making
  • Liaise regularly with Health and Nutrition teams at the field level and finance to monitor project spending.
  • Manage health and nutrition programme budget upto the limit defined by Muslim Aid Khartoum office
  • Work in close coordination with other health partners in the field including attending and contributing to Health/ Nutrition sector meetings and processes.
  • Supervise and support the Health & Nutrition team by providing technical and programme support (i.e. staff recruitment, training and mentoring national staff, ensure timely and quality project narrative reports, internal and to be provided to the donors on time according to donors’ requirement;
  • Ensure the use of qualitative and quantitative indicators, supervising the correct implementation of the projects in accordance with agreed strategies, principles, implementation plans, and donor requirements; monitor Health & Nutrition projects)
  • Work closely with the Health and Nutrition projects staff in the direct implementation of the activities specifically in the mentoring of the local staff and remote supervision of the activities in the field.
  • Ensure and support the mainstreaming of Health & Nutrition components in the Muslim Aid projects by providing technical expertise and assure that linkages among the projects are established and are sustainable.
  • Ensure the roll out of regular staff trainings and refresher sessions to maintain a high standard of capacity among the Health & Nutrition field teams in Kassala state.
  • Regularly visit to the Health & Nutrition programme sites in Kassala. Prepare mission reports should and share it with the relevant staff and partners. 
  • Prepare regular quarter report for Health & Nutrition programme in Kassala.

 

Grants Management and Reporting:

  • Prepare /Review technical aspects of internal and external reports within agreed deadlines using MA and donor formats, as required.
  • Prepare/ Review and advice on detailed program spending, procurement and work plans for health and nutrition programs in Kassala state.
  • Ensure internal and reports to donors are produced and delivered in a timely and quality manner.

 

Partnerships and Coordination:

  • Support collaborative partner relationships focused on mutual learning and capacity building as well as technical guidance in areas of MA expertise, including training/mentoring support that fully reflects the skills and attitudes required to work effectively in partnership.
  • Ensure technical and operational monitoring of partner activities in Kassala state to inform corrective actions that rigorously improves quality of care.
  • Represent MA at the cluster meeting at state level.

 

Program Development and Quality

  • Lead health and nutrition program design processes and provide technical oversight that ensure new or adapted programming focused on quality, efficiency, impact and integrated approaches with other sectors.
  • Participate to development of program proposals, budgets, detailed log frames, work plans, and monitoring tools in collaboration with Monitoring Evaluation and Learning (MEAL) and Finance Teams.
  • Ensure that health and nutrition activities demonstrate adherence to international and national standards.

 

Staff Performance Management, Learning & Development

  •  Supervise, and build the capacity of health and nutrition team members in relevant technical and management competencies, including remote management capacity building for team members inside Sudan.
  • Revise the structure of health and nutrition teams periodically and map staffing needs in alignment with program size and any expansion plans.
  • Coach, train, supervise and mentor direct-report staff to support career growth, including communicating clear expectations, setting annual performance objectives, providing regular and timely positive and constructive performance feedback, and providing documented semi-annual performance reviews in accordance to MA Staff Hand Book.
  • Maintain open and professional relations with team members, promoting a strong team spirit and provide oversight and guidance to enable staff to successfully perform in their positions.
  • Adhere to MA HR Policies and Procedures, and communicate through word and example a high standard of compliance with all applicable policies and regulations.

 


 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Bsc. degree in Medicine, Nutrition, Public Health or other health related science field is required. Masters degree preferred such as Public Health
  • Minimum of 5 years professional experience implementing humanitarian health and nutrition programs at managerial or coordination level, preferably with INGOs
  • Proven experience in emergency nutrition settings, BCC, PHC and others like CMAM, IYCF, major epidemic diseases surveillance and epidemic/outbreak investigation and response
  • Demonstrated experience in capacity building, project design and budget management.
  • Understanding of protection principles, gender main streaming, conflict sensitivity, and Do No Harm, as well as and contextual knowledge on Sudan.
  •  Ability to communicate technical issues effectively and persuasively
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with Sudanese civil society actors to generate mutually beneficial professional relationships based on mutual trust and respect.
  • Experience in effectively dealing with headquarters staff, as well as donor agencies, government officials, and other NGO's; ability to work with a broad spectrum of people.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills, including ability to communicate technical matters to a range of audiences.
  • Experience in quality assurance in a clinical setting desirable.
  • Excellent Computer knowledge – Microsoft office programs and relevant health data base.
  • Experience using HMIS or other data management and analysis programs is desirable.
  • Language requirements:  Arabic and Fluency in English is essential
  • Mature and structured approach to project and team management.
  • Ability to multi-task, ability to handle pressure well, flexibility, adaptability to transition.
  • Ability to travel in country.
