GIZ Sudan is looking for a qualified person to fill the following position: Communications and Knowledge Management Officer in Gedaref
The officer is reporting to the manager of the vocational training and food security for refugees and host communities project in Eastern Sudan.
On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Delegation of the European Union, GIZ started the implementation of a new project recently in Kassala and Gedaref. The project aims at improving the livelihoods of the local population and refugees alike in two areas of intervention:
1) Supporting the government and the private sector in improving the quality and availability of market-oriented vocational training for young women and men;
2) Supporting small industry unions in providing business development services (BDS) for employment-oriented growth of small and medium-sized enterprises.

The Communications and Knowledge Management Officer will be responsible to support and maintain internal and external communications with project collaborators and assist to execute the communication strategy elaborate and maintain the knowledge management of the project and maintain the project documentation.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Responsible for implementing the communications policies, strategies and guidelines of the BMZ, GIZ and EU;
  • Working with the project team and advising them on corporate communication and design standards, press relations, communication concepts, and event management;
  • Maintain project documentation;
  • Develop key promotional messages in consultation with the project team;
  • Participate in developing and evaluating feasibility, efficiency and quality of Information materials;
  • Responsible for the knowledge management system of the GIZ project based on the GIZ guidelines;
  • Assist in coordinating communication activities and events of the project and partners;
  • Assist in conducting awareness raising campaigns, events, information dissemination workshops, etc. for target groups;
  • Undertake field visits to monitor project implementation and liaise closely with target groups;
  • Participate in visits from BMZ, EU, GIZ and others for showcasing project progress and achievements;
  • Take lead in dissemination of communication materials to relevant stakeholders;
  • Draft case studies and relevant project documents and suggest recommendations on varied issues (as and when required)
  • Supporting the development, updating and implementation of communication strategies for GIZ working groups;
  • Compiles information materials for the media (basic material and for specific occasions) and distributes these systematically in line with the target group's needs.
  • Maintain documentation for the knowledge management system (hard copy and on network);
  • Support the Project Manager with strategic orientation in presenting a consistent GIZ image;
  • Cooperate and consult with the GIZ country office on matters around GIZ communication;
  • Develop communication instruments and assisting in introducing innovation and change for the GIZ project (e.g. manuals, guides, fact sheets, success stories, press releases, studies, technical publications);
  • Coordinate activities with external communication, service providers (e.g. appraisers, agencies, photographers, trainers, translators, printers, graphic designers).

Required experience and qualifications:

  • At least a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences / Communications;
  • At least 3 years of professional work experience in designing and executing communication activities, preferably in development cooperation;
  • Ability to work in a team and to cope with tight deadlines in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment;
  • Very good mastering of English and Arabic (both verbal and written);
  • Knowledge of and experience with media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media. Experience with communication/ creative agencies/ vendors are a plus;
  • Ability to communicate with people outside the GIZ Project, representing the Project to partners, the public, governments, and other external stakeholder;
  • Ability to create new ideas, relationships, systems, or products, including creative contributions;
  • Proficient in use of computer applications related to the tasks;
  • Experience of working with local NGOs, INGOs and government bodies would be an advantage;
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative and manage activities concurrently;
  • Ability to interact effectively with different stakeholders;
  • Position based in Gedaref with frequent travels within East Sudan;
  • Willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed – corresponding measures are agreed with management.
