GIZ Sudan is looking for a qualified person to fill the following position: Driver/translator for the “Cross-Border Collaboration Programme in Eastern Sudan and Western Ethiopia ” with duty station in Al Damazin, Blue Nile State, Sudan.
 
Context:
The GIZ  “Cross-Border Collaboration Programme in Eastern Sudan and Western Ethiopia” – funded by the European Union (EU) and the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) aims at addressing the drivers of migration and strengthen the populations’ resilience to instability and displacement in the borderlands of Benishangul Gumuz/Ethiopia and Blue Nile State/Sudan. This will include investments in enhancing and diversifying livelihoods, including livestock, agriculture and fisheries; strengthening basic service delivery; natural resource management; and promoting bilateral consultations, trade and private sector development as well supporting conflict management and resolution capacities.
The programme will provide local governments, communities and the private sector on both sides of the border with opportunities to improve and diversify livelihoods and better management of shared natural resources, investment in conflict prevention, and provide the means for better cooperation through a combination of strategical and administrative consultations. This will give people living in these areas better prospects, a greater sense of belonging, and a desire to live, work and raise their families in the region.
GIZ cooperates with a series of stakeholders and with partners in Sudan and the Blue Nile State including the Ministries of Agriculture, Internal Cooperation and Finance, the Peace Counsel of Blue Nile State, the German Embassy, the Delegation of the European Union and IGAD. The GIZ program driver will be based in Al Damazin, Blue Nile state.
Selected candidates will agree to undergo a job relevant medical examination prior to assignment.

A. Responsibilities:
The Driver is responsible for:

  • Safely and responsibly performing all official travel using official vehicles.
  • Regular and preventive servicing and looking after program vehicles and equipment.
  • Occasional translating for GIZ program staff.
  • Collecting information on road conditions, accessible routes and locations.
  • Running official errands and
  • Assisting with other office work.

The Driver performs the following tasks:
B. Tasks:
1. Driving:  

  • Provide passenger transport in an official car for program staff, official visitors and guests.
  • Run errands for the program e.g. sending letters and messages, paying bills and buying smaller quantities of office supplies.
  • Assist with transporting goods.
  • Complete the vehicle log correctly and conscientiously in accordance with GIZ standards and regulations.

2. Service:

  • Cleaning the interior and exterior of the vehicle(s) regularly.
  • Daily checking the engine, steering and brake oil, water, brakes, tyre pressure, battery levels and the entire vehicle before shift duty. Monthly checks of headlights, brakes, bodywork for dents according to checklist in vehicle logbook.  
  • Assuming responsibility for the project vehicle documents and their good condition, keeping a vehicle log and recording monthly maintenance.
  • Calculating monthly petrol, oil and lubricant consumption for the daily cash fund and for forwarding monthly vouchers to cost accounting.
  • Reporting need for service and carrying out minor repairs.
  • Reporting immediately all involvement of project vehicles in accidents, including minor accidents, damage, loss or theft of vehicle fittings.

3. Knowledge management:

  • Using all available information (including current radio news on traffic conditions) to update daily knowledge of road conditions, current passable routes and locations, and shares this information with other office drivers.

4. Other duties/additional tasks:

  • Assisting other colleagues as needed in the program if there is no travel pending.
  • Carrying out other office work on request.
  • Performing other duties and tasks at the request of senior management.  

C. Required qualifications, skills and experience:
Qualifications:

  • Secondary school education.
  • Holder of a valid driver’s licence.
  • Proven technical knowledge of a vehicle and engine is required.
  • No major accidents in the past 5 years.
  • Excellent knowledge of Arabic and English, ability to read and write in English for logbook, communications and translation purposes (basic English is not sufficient!).

Skills:

  • Disciplined and punctual.
  • Resilient and patient.
  • Appropriate appearance and attire (friendly manner with all passengers).
  • Ensure vehicle readiness at all times.
  • Willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed – corresponding measures are agreed upon with management.
  •  

Experience:

  • Professional experience: at least 5 years’ work experience as a driver for international organizations with verifiable references.
  • Familiarity within Al Damazin, Khartoum and Blue Nile state.

Desirable experience:

  • Certified defensive driver courses.
  • Certified advanced driver courses.
  • Certified off-road driving courses.
  • Medical first aid.
  • English diploma.

Note: certificates of attendance of driver trainings will not be sufficient.
