GIZ Sudan is looking for a qualified person to fill the following position: Driver / Liaison Assistant for the “Cross-Border Collaboration Programme in Eastern Sudan and Western Ethiopia ” with duty station in Al Damazin, Blue Nile State, Sudan.

The GIZ  “Cross-Border Collaboration Programme in Eastern Sudan and Western Ethiopia” – funded by the European Union (EU) and the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) aims at addressing the drivers of migration and strengthen the populations’ resilience to instability and displacement in the borderlands of Benishangul Gumuz/Ethiopia and Blue Nile State/Sudan. This will include investments in enhancing and diversifying livelihoods, including livestock, agriculture and fisheries; strengthening basic service delivery; natural resource management; and promoting bilateral consultations, trade and private sector development as well supporting conflict management and resolution capacities.
The programme will provide local governments, communities and the private sector on both sides of the border with opportunities to improve and diversify livelihoods and better management of shared natural resources, investment in conflict prevention, and provide the means for better cooperation through a combination of strategical and administrative consultations. This will give people living in these areas better prospects, a greater sense of belonging, and a desire to live, work and raise their families in the region.

GIZ cooperates with a series of stakeholders and with partners in Sudan and the Blue Nile State including the Ministries of Agriculture, Internal Cooperation and Finance, the Peace Counsel of Blue Nile State, the German Embassy, the Delegation of the European Union and IGAD. The driver/liaison assistant will be based in Al Damazin, Blue Nile state
Selected candidates will agree to undergo a job relevant medical examination prior to assignment.

Responsibilities include:
The Driver / Liaison Assistant (DLA) for GIZ office is responsible for the daily management of the GIZ liaison and driving activities as well as the vehicles for the GIZ program in Blue Nile state. The DLA will be required to facilitate in issuing visas, travel permits, drivers licenses and renewal of vehicles registration for GIZ. More specific responsibilities are as follows:

Within these responsibilities, tasks include :

  • Administration and support of international / national visa related tasks and travel permit processes.
  • Produce the weekly visa, travel permit and liaison issues in a status update.
  • Processing and follow up on travel permits with the relevant government ministries in consultation with the General System manager in Khartoum.
  • Complete the application forms for migration process and attaching the relevant copies for submission to MOFA.
  • Photocopy and proper filing of approved travel documents.
  • Complete travel permit forms and submitting the documentation to the General System manager in Khartoum.
  • Photocopy and keep organized copies of all approved documents.
  • Provide a weekly update to the General system manager.

Communication and Liaison:

  • Maintain regular and engaged communication with all relevant external organizations (MOFA, Immigration, Labour Office etc) to identify and address specific issues regarding visa processing.
  • Provide accurate, constructive up to date advice and information for staff and senior management.

Other Duties:

  • Carry out all the functions needed for operational the fleet.
  • Drive the vehicle allocated to you in a safe and lawful manner at all time.
  • Observe general traffic rules and regulations.
  • Drive with safety speed, not exceeded 100 Km/h on highways and 60 Km/h on secondary roads.  
  • Conduct the daily check-up & routine check and minor maintenance to ensure vehicle operationality.  
  • Report of any accidents and/or traffic violations promptly to the Head of Finance and Administration and the Risk Management Advisor or component leader.
  • Ensure that not-authorized drive vehicles assigned to you.    
  • Keep the vehicle clean inside and outside at all times.
  • Take over responsible for emergency equipment in vehicles.
  • Conduct the Pre- Operating Maintenance by checks.
  • Conduct the visually inspection such as: body dirt – oil and fuel leakages – signs of loose nuts & bolts – and necessary emergency equipment such as: jack and log wrench. – rear view mirror – fuel cap – radiator cap.
  • Conduct operating maintenance.
  • Using the log book on a daily basis for registering the mileages, fuel, and maintenance undertaken.

C. Required qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Bachelor/university degree in public relation art or any related area.
  • Holder of a valid driver’s licence.
  • Excellent language English and Arabic skills a must (German is considered an asset).
  • Proven technical knowledge of a vehicle and engine is required.
  • No major accidents in the past 5 years.
  • Excellent knowledge of Arabic and English, ability to read and write in English for logbook, communications and translation purposes (basic English is not sufficient!).

  • Appropriate appearance and attire (friendly manner with all passengers).
  • Willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed – corresponding measures are agreed upon with management.  
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to function well in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Reliability and discretion as well as a good sense of confidentiality.


  • Professional experience: at least 5 years’ work experience for international organizations with verifiable references.
  • Familiarity within Al Damazin, Blue Nile State and Khartoum.
  • Desirable experience:
  • Certified defensive driver courses.
  • Certified advanced driver courses.
  • Certified off-road driving courses.
  • Medical first aid.
  • English diploma.
