Background: For more than a decade, UN Environment has been working with Sudanese national, state and local leaders, civil society and the international community to encourage the sustainable development of the country’s natural resources – with the ultimate aim of assisting the people of Sudan to achieve peace, recovery and development on an environmentally sustainable basis. More specifically, it is engaged in safeguarding the environment, combating negative impacts of climate change, helping to improve natural resources management and integrated water resources management through participatory community involvement. These engagements contribute to enhanced environmental management and governance in Sudan through rural livelihoods improvements, via state-level innovations to federal-level policies, and contributing through strengthening the local and national economy guided by the Sustainable Development Goals. UN Environment has secured UKaid/DFID funding for the Adapt for Environment and Climate Resilience in Sudan (ADAPT!) project in order to achieve increased understanding and integration of climate resilience, environmental management & governance in programme delivery, plans and policy in Sudan. This 4-year project (2015-2019) is being operated at state and central level and managed from the UN Environment Khartoum offices. In the framework of the ADAPT! project UN Environment provides strategic guidance, expert advice, targeted technical assistance, demonstration of best practices, monitoring and lesson learning across a range of environment and climate action in Sudan. UN Environment engages with a broad range of partners to achieve the best results, targeting specific organisations responsible for a particular activity.
