 Background:

For more than a decade, UN Environment has been working with Sudanese national, state and local leaders, civil society and the international community to encourage the sustainable development of the country’s natural resources – with the ultimate aim of assisting the people of Sudan to achieve peace, recovery and development on an environmentally sustainable basis. More specifically, it is engaged in safeguarding the environment, combating negative impacts of climate change, helping to improve natural resources management and integrated water resources management through participatory community involvement. These engagements contribute to enhanced environmental management and governance in Sudan through rural livelihoods improvements, via state-level innovations to federal-level policies, and contributing through strengthening the local and national economy guided by the Sustainable Development Goals.

UN Environment has secured UKaid/DFID funding for the Adapt for Environment and Climate Resilience in Sudan (ADAPT!) project in order to achieve increased understanding and integration of climate resilience, environmental management & governance in programme delivery, plans and policy in Sudan. This 4-year project (2015-2019) is being operated at state and central level and managed from the UN Environment Khartoum offices.

In the framework of the ADAPT! project UN Environment provides strategic guidance, expert advice, targeted technical assistance, demonstration of best practices, monitoring and lesson learning across a range of environment and climate action in Sudan. UN Environment engages with a broad range of partners to achieve the best results, targeting specific organisations responsible for a particular activity. 

To help ensure a successful communication to partners and public regarding the UN Environment Sudan Country Programme and specifically the ADAPT! project, the UN Environment Sudan Country Programme seeks to engage a Communication Specialist, whose terms of reference will be as follows.

The Communication Specialist will support the communication needs of the UN Environment Sudan Country Programme with a special emphasis on the ADAPT! project and a supporting role to the other projects of the portfolio. The specialist will play a key role in helping to raise the profile of UN Environment’s work in Sudan.

 

Ultimate result of services:

 

Communication and visibility activities targeted at main stakeholders developed and delivered for the UN Environment Sudan Country Programme in general and the ADAPT! project in particular.

 

Objectives:

  • Principle ADAPT! stakeholders identified and updated, as need be
  • Communication/visibility strategies implemented and updated, as need be
  • ADAPT! project materials produced
  • Visibility of UN Environment Sudan and the donor (UKaid/DFID) secured and increased
  • Social media content developed and regular update maintained.

The deliverables of this consultancy include:

  • Targeted ADAPT! project communications/visibility products
  • Information materials for dissemination in Arabic and English
  • Best practices and success stories of UN Environment Sudan portfolio disseminated
  • Sudanese public, especially youth and women informed on and involved in UN Environment programmes
  • Briefings and information notes, as requested by the ADAPT! Project Manager, Country Programme Manager, PCDMB Office (Geneva) and/or UN Environment HQ (Nairobi).

 

Specific tasks and responsibilities:

 

The duties and responsibilities of this position are as follows:

 

Core duties

  • Implement the communication/visibility strategy for the ADAPT! Project, and ensure that the strategy is kept up to date on an ongoing basis;
  • Develop/update information materials (factsheets, brochures etc.) presenting the ADAPT! project objectives and implementation arrangements suitable for different audiences;
  • Coordinate project-related publications process, in consultation with the Post-Conflict and Disaster Management Branch in Geneva, UN Environment project managers, authors and internal stakeholders, to ensure adherence to timelines and schedules;
  • Supervise short-term consultants and vendors working within the remit of publications process, i.e.: translators, copy-editors, illustrators, graphic designers and printers;
  • Support other projects under UN Environment’s programme in Sudan in development of project-related communications activities and material – such as press-releases and media outreach events, project toolkits, multimedia, publications and dissemination products;
  • Manage and grow UN Environment in Sudan’s Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/UNEnvironmentSudan/) as a key tool for outreach to the Sudanese public;
  • Ensure UN Environment’s website for Sudan is kept up to date and informative: https://www.unenvironment.org/explore-topics/disasters-conflicts/where-we-work/sudan
  • Take the lead on UN Environment’s communication activities for World Environment Day (5 June) in Khartoum and the field;
  • Liaise with the UN Environment Regional Office, Communication Division and colleagues in the Post-Conflict and Disaster Management Branch to improve internal information sharing and knowledge management, including attending Monthly Editorial Meeting calls with UN Environment’s Communication Division on behalf of UN Environment Sudan.
  • Share information on UN Environment global communications campaigns with colleagues in Sudan;
  • Contribute regularly to UN newsletters in Sudan – via UNIC – with UN Environment Sudan project stories;
  • Manage other UN Environment Sudan online platforms and accounts (including Dropbox, MailChimp, Flickr, UNOG email, Survey Monkey, Gmail).

 

Other responsibilities

  • Undertake periodic field visits for improved understanding of UN Environment programming by identifying content, and coordinating with field-based communications counterparts;
  • Engage with relevant partners and UN family such as members of the Information Advocacy Working Group and UN Communications Working Group (UNCWG) to ensure UN Environment presence and participation in UN events and activities and support UN Environment project needs.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  • At least two years of professional experience in the field of communications, related to environment and/or climate change and/or development;
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, environment or a related field is required. Master’s degree is an asset;
  • Strong writing and editing skills are required;
  • Strong computer skills are required;
  • Fluency in both Arabic and English is required;
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills;
  • Knowledge of the Sudan context, with experience working in Sudan;
  • Experience in use and management of social media tools and analytics;
  • Knowledge of communications planning and implementation tools;
  • Experience in preparation of targeted communications materials (presentations, photos, written materials);
  • Experience in managing external contractors to achieve high-quality final products;
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud software for layout and design-related tasks;
  • Good eye for design and sense of aesthetics;
  • Ability to work independently and to participate effectively in a team based information sharing environment.
