The World Health Organization, Sudan Office is looking for a qualified candidate to fill the following post:

Job Title: Polio Eradication Officer
Grade Level: NOA
No. of Post: Multi vacant posts
Duty Station: Blue Nile, Central and East Darfur States+Roster

  Background:

The Polio Eradication Officer works under the direct supervision of the Polio Coordinator or Polio Team Leader of the geographical location or in a small Country Offices directly under the WHO Representative. S/he receives technical guidance from various WHO Specialists in the respective field of work .The incumbent coordinates activities of local surveillance personnel but does not have direct supervisory or managerial responsibilities.



  Duties and responsibilities:

The incumbent will perform the following duties:

Function 1 (incl. expected results)

Carries out basic analyses to evaluate progress towards polio eradication objectives, achieving results such as:

  • Preparation of performing and situational analyses and reports for advisory bodies and other organizations or institutions.
  • Frequent updates of surveillance information from designated areas.
  • Coordination of data collection, timely data analysis and preparation of activities reports.
  • Reviewing reports submitted by various partners and feedback to various health authorities in the designated areas.

Function 2 (incl. expected results)

Facilitates the implementation of polio eradication activities, achieving results such as:

  • In coordination with the technical teams and partners, the selection of the sites for environmental surveillance.
  • Selection of appropriate vaccinators according to the guidelines.
  • Monitoring the receipt of samples as per schedule.
  • Timely investigation of all Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) cases including stool collection and transportation
  • Coordination of implementation of active surveillance and routine reporting.
  • Appropriate action and feedback in response to the surveillance findings.
  • Regular performance reviews including analysis of surveillance data; identification of technical and performance bottlenecks; recommendations on solutions to overcome the challenges.
  • Implementation of measures to ensure achievement and maintenance of certification standards for Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance system.

Function 3 (incl. expected results)

Meets and liaises with local counterparts involved in polio eradication activities, achieving results such as:

  • Maintenance of regular contact with EPI staff (expanded programmes on immunization), surveillance staff, local authorities and other partners.
  • Response to queries and solution finding to problems, including conducting proper research studies when required.
  • Participation in meetings dedicated to the planning of all activities in collaboration with local authorities’ counterparts.
  •  Input and alerts to ensure inclusion of all high risk, underserved and/or migrant population in the surveillance network.

 

 
Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

Educational background

First level university degree is in Medicine and/or public health planning and administration, complemented by a degree or studies in poliomyelitis, immunization, epidemiology.

Professional experience and knowledge

- At least 1 year of experience required in health sector coordination with emphasis on Polio Eradication and/or Expanded Programme of Immunization.

- Knowledge of Epidemiology.

- Knowledge of WHO mandate and goals or experience in UN Organizations, international institutions or NGOs is considered an asset

 

Language Skills

Fluent in English and the local language
