 Background:

The ADAPT! project aims to increase understanding and integration of climate resilience and environmental management into programme delivery, plans, and policy across the international humanitarian response, recovery and development programmes in Sudan. This will help the people of Sudan to cope with environmental stresses and climate change. One of the major themes of the ADAPT! project is the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). The project aims to mainstream an evidence based approach to the sustainable management of water resources for all purposes, involving water users and decision makers, supported by appropriate institutional and policy frameworks. To achieve this, the evidence base for the need for IWRM needs to be built, including institutional capacity for understanding, data collection & analysis.

IN this regard, UN environment would like to recruit IWRM consultant toassist in developing this evidence based and collecting examples of best practice and case studies across Sudan.



 
 Duties and responsibilities:

The specific responsibilities of the IWRM consultant will include:

  1. Producing an IWRM baseline and gap analysis for Sudan. This analysis will be a resource that acts as an initial reference for policy makers and water management professionals.
  2. Producing a report showcasing IWRM best practices (case studies) identified in Sudan. This will provide an evidence base for advocacy tools to engage development and government partners.
  3. Developing an awareness raising strategy and tools for Sudan. The strategy will be produced based on lessons learnt from the baseline and gap analysis and case studies.
  4. Facilitating one or more IWRM workshop at federal or states level to galvanise support for UN Environment’s IWRM approach, and secure political buy-in for IWRM being integrated into national planning strategies.
  5. Liaising with the UN Environment’s communications team to produce appropriate communications material (such as brochures, presentations, posters) for advocacy and training in English and Arabic designed for the specific stakeholder groups, including: government, technical staff, community members, etc.
  6. Ensuring timely delivery of work.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

  1. Advanced university degree in water engineering, economics, environment or related fields with proven knowledge of socio-economic aspects of sustainable development.
  2. Extensive knowledge and understanding of IWRM.
  3. Proven record in IWRM research and writing ability.
  4. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  5. Minimum of 7 - 10 years working experience in IWRM related projects.
  6. Excellent facilitation and coordination skills; sensitivity for gender and local culture.
  7. Previous experience working for an international organisation and an understanding of project management cycles desirable.
  8. Language: Fluency in spoken and outstanding written English is required.
