NUNV Generator Mechanic

 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Work closely with IUNV Generator Mechanic to carry out tasks related to generator installations in the mission;
  • Work closely with IUNV Generator Mechanic to assess current skills and capacity (of NUNV) and develop capacity development plan for the contract period including measurable results.
  • Participate in periodic capacity development monitoring and evaluation sessions to assess progress in implementation of capacity development plan.
  • Support installation of new generators, including allied works;
  • Contribute to maintenance of existing generator systems in mission;
  • Perform work such that the generator installations/works meet the safety standards in accordance with international codes and regulations;
  • Contribute to installation of large capacity generators to form complete power generating stations, including identifying sites and advising on platforms and generator houses in various locations through the mission area;
  • Carry out scheduled routine maintenance, emergency repairs and overhauling of generators (static/mobile), including the installation of auxiliary fuel systems, such as main tanks, transfer pump and pit works;
  • Develop skills to analyze and correct distortions on loads, balance the loading on all three phases of three-phase generators, and trouble-shoot causes of load imbalance and provide solution;
  • Provide input on correct requirement of electrical loads for proper sizing of generators;
  • Gain experience in carryign out surveys, preparing technical reports, drawings and material quantities, and designing simple installations;
  • Develop skills in preparing material specifications for the purpose of raising requisitions;
  • Provide lists of spare parts for diesel engines, alternators, and control panels as well as necessary tools and equipment, well in advance;
  • Assist with monitoring the tools/equipment and spare parts inventory; Ensure the use of the spare parts in most productive manner;
  • Liaise with IUNV Generator Mechanic and Electro-Mechanical Engineer for expert advice on generator works; Liaise with the Electrician regarding electrical matters and other engineering sub-units for generator works; Provide instructions on end-use care and servicing of generator sets;
  • Receive training on proper operation, upkeep, general maintenance of generators and monitoring adequate supply of spare parts for routine scheduled maintenance, as well as maintain log books, maintenance records and spare parts’ consumption records;
  • Contribute to coordination with outside agencies appointed to enhance the Unit’s maintenance capabilities; Provide input for data entries in the asset control database immediately after receipt, repairs/overhaul, transfer, and disposal of generators;
  • Measure and assess capacity/skill gains at end of contract and draft recommendations for continued capacity development activities.
  • Carry out capacity needs assessment of appropriate national personnel to determine level of skills / knowledge and identify gaps in abilities and competencies that are required in their positions.
  • Develop realistic capacity development strategy and plan including methods, milestones, resources, monitoring and evaluation plan, reporting format / schedule, and expected results / objectives.
  • Implement capacity development program with appropriate national personnel per the established plan/program with regular feedback to target individuals and reports to supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties defined by the direct supervisor.

 
 Minimum Qualification, Skills and Experience Required:

 

  • Education:  High school diploma or equivalent. Vocational training from a related technical school, with appropriate apprenticeship training. The incumbent should possess a recognized certificate as a Generator Mechanic, in accordance with the Guilds Standard or approved equivalent. The Generator Mechanic should, in addition, have specialist training in gas/electric welding procedures and possess proficiency in handling of power tools and testing equipment.

                                                                                                                                                            

  • Experience: At least 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in generator maintenance, including field experience. Experience in standard techniques and practices for maintenance of various types of generators. Familiarity with safety rules and operating procedures is required. Familiarity with electrical installations, trouble shooting and control wiring preferred.

 

  • Language:  Excellent command of spoken and written English and fluency in Arabic.

 

Other Skills:

 

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team of international and national staff.
  • Demonstrated ability or aptitude to use computer applications such as Microsoft Office suites – Word, Power-Point and Excel Spreadsheets. Knowledge of other UN supported software may be desirable but not mandatory.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Arabic with ability to develop appropriate English language skills as required.
  • Hold valid driver’s license and proven ability to drive manual gear 4x4 vehicles;
  • Expressed interest and intent to develop technical capacity in the area of Generator Mechanics;
  • Affinity with or interest  in volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development and the UN System;
  • Sound security awareness

National United Nations Volunteers Conditions of Service

National UN volunteers do not receive a salary for their services. Instead they are provided with a volunteer living allowance (VLA) that is intended to cover basic living expenses. In Sudan, the VLA is US$638 per month. This modest allowance enables the volunteer to live in basic, adequate and safe conditions thereby reflecting the volunteer spirit of the assignment.

 

The UNV contract will be issued initially to 30 June 2015 with possibility of 12-month extensions depending on mission requirement and performance of the volunteer. National UN volunteers are covered by health, life, and disability insurance. Other entitlements are provided per the National UN Volunteer Conditions of Service.
